Hello,
I lost my keys (home, office, etc.) - what should I do next (after realizing that I have no idea where they are)? Should I call the police or go there directly? Can it be an arbitrary police station or the one corresponding to my Kreisbuero\neighbourhood?

You have local lost property offices (Fundbüro). Not the police,

I found a front door type key in a car park a couple of months ago. I took it into a couple of shops nearby to see if I could leave it with them and they looked at me as if I was mad!

It was one of those KASA star type keys and I remembered reading on here that they cost a fortune to replace so I took it to my local police station. The police man asked to see my passport to my amazement.....then a week later I received a box of chocolate and a bouquet of flowers. The owner had been reunited with their key and I was rewarded for doing the right thing! I will definately hand anything I find again! Aparently the police have a register of all those type of keys. Is your house key one of those?

These are my house and office keys - it is quite bad. I am just back from the Fundbuero - nothing is found. I will try and look for them very well again... Is there a point going to the Police (I lost my keys, I did not find anything)?

You can wait to see if the Police contact you! But what if the Key register hasn't been updated with your details? It will take no more than half hour of your time and is certainly worth a go - any maybe lucky! Also have you checked your home insurance you may be covered for lost keys?

I don't have a home insurance...

You'd better hope no-one finds your keys and comes round to clean you out, then...

I'm sorry for your loss! I can recommend http://www.keymail.ch/km-de_ch/Schlu...sselschutz.php. For 30.- you get a small metal badge which you put on your keychain. If somebody finds your key and sees the badge, they can throw it in any mailbox and it will be returned to you (personal number on badge). Amazingly, it really works (happened to a friend of mine). Plus it's valid for 5 years. Good luck!
