Washer + Blower

Hi all,

We looked at a nice apartment last night that I'm considering putting in an application for. The one drawback was the laundry situation - it was assigned days (I guess I can get over that) and instead of a dryer, it's a blower and you hang your things? I'm not familiar with that - is that going to be too much of a pain? Do things ever really dry that way and/or are they sort of crunchy? For reference, we are two people - I do laundry about once a week, mostly to keep on top of our combined smelly exercise clothes.

thanks!

Hanging clothes is one of the biggest pain in the anus!! It takes forever to hang...it takes forever dry and it takes forever to take down!! I've had first hand experience with hanging clothes all I can say...NEVER AGAIN!!

Yeah - it works pretty well....the rooms are pretty well ventilated so it can take a little while in winter, but its certainly not a reason to not take the apartment.

As long as you can get over the assigned days, I'd take it

You'll be easy to spot in the street, with the jeans about an inch too short and the pack of angry environmentalists following behind

I buy my clothes in the US. That stuff doesn't shrink. You can easily spot t-shirts made in or for the North American market, as they are seamless on the side. The Euro and Asian stuff has seams on the side and tend to shrink. Also, products especially made in Switzerland or for the Swiss market (except major name brands) are lower quality and shrink easily.

But guilty as charged on the green issue??

To be fair, I used to do the same but my Swiss ex drummed it into me what a wasteful thing it was to do.....so I became a bit on an eco-evangelist here....nothing worse than a reformed sinner, right??

Oh yeah..I guess I'm guilty on the green issue..but hardly feel guilty at all.
On the other hand, many of those clothes hanging rooms have an inbuilt blower. Now I'm not really sure if spin-drying your clothes for an hour uses more energy than blow-drying them for 4.

Oh - easily less - you can get ten times as much stuff in a room than in a dryer, and the heat in the dryer is the thing that takes the energy, not the wind

I tell ya what...on a cold winter night...after I put on those warm fresh sheets on the bed and dry myself after a bath with a warm towel...I could basically not really care about my carbon footprint and be glad that I don't need to wait another 3 hours to get my laundry.

'Apres mois le deluge' eh Lib?
I'm still using the drier too though, because I've had enough of the police inspectors in the laundry-room giving me a bad time for being five minutes late taking my stuff off the lines

I like the blower, as the clothes still smell nice after they have dried

I think I'd pass on that and keep looking for an apartment. Odds are you will still have assigned laundry day/time but you can find something that has an actual dryer.

Woah... LiB - you're getting soft in your old age. There was a time when you wouldn't have given a "rat's ass" to quote the vernacular. Although quite what a rat would be doing with an ass, I've never understood.

For reference, we are two people - I do laundry about once a week, mostly to keep on top of our combined smelly exercise clothes.

thanks!
You'll be all right! Assigned days are fairly normal here. Do ask about the schedule though: is it "one day per week" or "three consecutive days once a month"? Is there one assigned day per week/fortnight/whatever, plus one day a week where it's a free-for-all? That can be a lifesaver.

We had a blower and a tumble dryer in our last place. I preferred the blower to be honest... rarely ever used the tumble dryer unless we were in a major hurry. Takes a little more time to hang the clothes up, but they dry with fewer wrinkles, no static and no horrible antistatic-dryer-sheet smell. Plus no lint trap to clean which is apparently THE major cause of neighborly disharmony in this country.

Haha. Too true. We looked a place once - 3 hrs every 2 weeks. The "inspection tour" stopped then and there.

The washing schedule was often amongst the first questions we asked when flat hunting... surprised they don't mention it in the ads
