when to visit...?

Hi to all,

I'm due to start a new job in Zurich in October, so need accomodation from October 1st.

I currently live in the UK, so need to plan a visit for viewings / interviews etc.

When would be the best time to come over, given that I need accomodation from the Oct 1st. Would it be best to come now (i.e. late Aug / early Sept) and try and arrange something early, or come later in September (around the 13th or so). When do people put they're properties up for viewings etc?

Cheers!!

P.s. How long should I stay during this visit? Would 1 week be enough?

Re: when to visit...?

Er... you need accommodation from Oct. 1? Start looking in May.

On July 1 there were a grand total of 125 apartments free - in Zürich, a city of 375,000. The housing market is extremely tight here; most apartments change hands through personal connections and don't even make it onto the market, or are on it for only a matter of hours.

Hopefully your new employer can fix you up with something temporary. Ask them. Otherwise, my advice is to put your commuter hat on and start looking at suburbs like Thalwil, Winterthur and Basel.

Re: when to visit...?

I agree with the posts above. Finding your own apartment in Zurich is not easy and takes time. If your employer can't find you temporary accommodation, you might be better to try a flat share. That seems to be much easier and quicker to organise than a full rental contract. Best of luck with your move!

Re: when to visit...?

Thanks for the (worrying..!) replies,

Fortunately, I'm happy with a flatshare aswell as having my own apartment. Which I suppose gives me some hope!

Re: when to visit...?

I have exactely the same problem...
Will move there in Feb and planning to visit (at least once) in Oct/Nov to see apartments. My question is, how do I arrange appointments? Are there any estate agencies that can help me out?
