Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

Hi Everyone,

I have just got married, and my husband and I are looking for somewhere new to live to start our family.
Let me tell you a bit about our position at the moment: we are both studying, although I am only doing it part time through distance learning. I also work work full time as a child minder looking after a 4 year old and a 2 year old. My husband is working in service for extra cash while he studies full time biology.
We have quite a lot of savings, enough for a deposit on a flat, and would like to buy. We have been living in Altstetten for the last 2 years, but would like to move to a more family friendly area. I have been looking at flats in Adliswil as this is the closest to the city that I think we can afford, but would like to know more infor about how it is to live in Adliswil.
- Are there many playgroups in the area that are english speaking as well as german speaking?
- are there many english spesakers around?
- How is it for facilities.... swimming pools, shops, activities etc?
- How easy is it to get into the city? good connections? cost?
- is it worth while to have a car to get around or is the public transport efficient?

I would be really grateful for any information about Adliswil, and also to get to know anyone living there in case we do move!!

Welcome to the Forum.

You've put your first post in Housing in General, which is where the first bit of it belongs. However, the answers to your various other questions will more likely be found in the relevant sections. It might be worth your while to look at the Sub-forums, check out the stickies for general information and then search for specific points and ask again on here when things are not clear.

Good luck in your searching.

Adliswil is close to Zürich, 16 minutes by train S4. There are also buses and night trains and buses. The trains are every ten minutes in rush hour, every 20 mins otherwise. The facilities are very good; MM Migros, good cheese shop, many local shops, pubs, music schools, ballet school etc. They've recently smartened up the main roads through with two new roundabouts, in fact since the S4 has been upgraded due to sihl city most of the towns along the S4 have had a face lift (including langnau am albis). there are two good pools, a running track, you're near the felsenegg cable car and close to nature. you have the sihl nearby which is nice for walking or cycling. re play groups there are a couple of excellent local ones and there used to be an english speaking on but not sure if it is still around (mctots.ch?). there are some good local restaurants, a good kebab shop, I fully recommend adliswil, its close to zurich, got many facilities, close to the motorway and relatively inexpensive for CH

Very helpful post MG but how on earth am I supposed to keep members in line when you are so good at subversive behaviour! Now I'll have to add Tags so that I can find the Thread for the next person who asks exactly the same questions.

Adliswil is close to Zürich, 23 minutes by train S4.
Can I alter the train time? It's only 16 minutes. Not being picky or owt, but those 7 mins could make all the difference if you need to get a connection.

Re: Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

If you've lived in Zurich for at least 2 years, and still do, it might also be a good idea to just visit Adliswil. Then you can get a feel for the place, in addition to the practical advice you'll receive here.

Hi MrsSchwegler,

Adliswil is very family friendly and has a good amount of english speakers (I know because SwissRe has 2 large offices in Adliswil and alot of their english speaking employees live there with their families). It is also very safe.

Hope that helps.

Re: Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

I never lived there but I have some English-speaking friends who do, and it seems a nice and convenient town with all kinds of facilities, yet still close to Zürich. A car is always handy with kids, but I guess you can also do without.

If you are buying you need to be really sure that you want to live there long-term. I would suggest that you go and have a look there on different times/days to get a feeling of what the place is like and if the shop-opening times etc. suit your schedule

Re: Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

I have been there a few times, but I always find that it is useful to get tips from others who live/have lived there.
I like it, and we will definaltely buy, even if we only plan to stay there for a few years as we dont like to rent.

Thanks for all your info, we have found some nice places that we are going to look at in the next week.

Adliswil is lovely for families. You have beautiful views from most of the apartments there. The shopping is great with a mini-mall consisting of a Migros and other shops like Vogele. You also have Denner and Coop near by. There's beautiful places to walk and see the lake etc...Go take a visit. There's a hotel there called Ibis that you can stay at and check out the town. But yes it's perfect for families.

It might be worth your while joining the yahoo group families in zurich and asking about Asliswil. I am pretty sure there are lots of English speakers who live there.
These is definately a playgroup as well. I cant remember the name as I only visited it with a friend who was dropping off some books. But they were very friendly American parents. I think it is in the methodist or baptist church.

Re: Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

There are a lot of English-speaking families in Adliswil. It seems like every other person at my husband's office lives there. Also, many people who live in Adliswil attend our playgroup (in Rüschlikon):
http://sites.google.com/site/playgro.../our-playgroup

If you want to get to Thalwil/Rüschlikon (for instance to Park im Grüene), you really will need a car, as the only buses that run between there and Adliswil are early morning or evening. Well, unless you want to detour all the way to Langnau, which takes longer than walking.

Re: Should I move to Adliswil, ZH?

Stay away from Adliswil if you are planning on having a family and sendng them to the local schools

Its fine as if you are going to live there as a working couple but having children there and integration is very hard in a town of this size. I know becuase i've lived there for a few years, sent my kids to the local schools and it was a complete disaster.

Every expat i know that's moved to Adliswil hated it and moved out after a year and we're doing the same now

The Schools are also very poor and thier results are appalling. The teachers don't supervise the children at break time so every day there's a mini skirmish between the different nationalities. Apparently though this is normal when i asked the teacher about it!

Look at Langnau which is just up the road, its a lot better and a only a couple of minutes further out.

Right across from these new buildings is the Zurich International School, now I don't know if that is your budget or what not but I think it needs to be stated for fair measure as it is probably the best International School in the region and the new campus is in Adliswil.
If you have 30,000 CHF spare a year then yes no problems. The Zug (Baar) is a lot better if you ask me and they collect from Adliswil.

PS: Swiss public education and transport are amongst the very very best in the world so I wouldn't fret too much about either of the two.
I agree, but not in Adliswill the Sonnersburg school is a complete dump. the percentage of children going on to the grammer schools from there is literally non-existent.

Now then, do I sense a bit of negativity towards Adliswil here?

We used to live in the city; Seefeld then Heinrichstrasse (Industry - Kreis 5) but with the arrival of our son last year decided to move out.

We looked all over, and finally ended up in Pfäffikon SZ.

Nice quiet spot, but with a big shopping centre (seedamm) and plenty to do - 20 skiing venues 30 minutes or less away, reasonable rent, on a main train line so 30 minutes to Enge, and to top it off 40% less tax compared to ZH.

Difficult to move back to ZH after that.

Oh dear OBone!
Lots of negativity there!
I'm negative about the country by times but would never ever be negative about Adliswil, nor "Sonnersburg" or whatever you called it when it's written correctly! Know some expats that have lived there for years too!
