High cleaning prices

Hi,

I am moving to a new apartment and I have noticed two weird things:

1. I am paying for cleaning for the apartment I am leaving and the apartment I am moving in. Is this normal? I though I have to pay for cleaning either when I move in or when I move out.

2. They are charging me 9CHF/sq.m which adds up to 720CHF for an 80sq.m apartment. Is this price normal? In my opinion this job requires one person for 4-5 hours, why is it that expensive?

Thanks!

Re: High cleaning prices

The price seems about right, but it's weird to have to pay to have your new apartment cleaned. That should be the responsibility of the outgoing tenant or the landlord - not you!

when i moved out of my flat (140 sqm) it took around 30 man hours of cleaning. they are very picky about how a flat should be cleaned.

Re: High cleaning prices

Are you sure it is not a deposit of cleaning the apartment when you will leave in the futur?

We had to pay a deposit of 800 chf when we moved into our apartment (for cleaning only) and we could have done the whole cleaning ourself but we decided we didn't have the time, energy and capacity to do it, so we were more than happy to have paid that amount when we moved in!

I think Nil is right. Basel has its own rules. I'm sure this has been covered before. Try searching for 'cleaning Basel' - perhaps the relevant site is linked in there.

Re: High cleaning prices

Thanks all for your replies.

I called the landlord he mentioned that I don't have to pay when I move out. So first point is clear.

But what is really annoying is that he refused to let me clean the apartment. This does not make sense at all... He is forcing me to buy a service that I don't want!

Re: High cleaning prices

I think you can get it back if your end clean is satisfactory to them. If not they'd keep the cleaning money to employ their own cleaner.

That's how it worked for me in a couple of places anyhow....it's like another deposit.
