Finding an apartment in Biel area

Hi all

Does anyone know of any letting agencies who might be amenable to a six/nine month max rent in the Biel area as we want to avoid having to find someone to take-over or do a sublet?

Also are there any areas of Biel to avoid?

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks for your help.

You could try bracher.ch, they have several appts empty for ages, but it's mainly because they're so overpriced... How many rooms are you looking for?

Re: Finding an apartment in Biel area

Many thanks for the information. We are ideally looking for 4 rooms (3 beds) but we possibly could make do with 2 bedrooms for a short while. New ones are nearly 2000 chf per month is this reasonable? Most seem to be 12 month lease. We will definitely look into the above mentioned agencies.

Kind regards

Yes, that would be about the going rate for a middle of the range three bedroom flat in what is a relatively cheap part of the country.

The most common type of lease here is for an initial period of 12 months, after which you can normally cancel by giving three months' notice. In some leases the notice period can only end at certain specific dates (typically the end of March, June and September). You can in theory get out of the lease outside of the stipulated dates if you can provide the letting agency with the names of three solvent people who are willing to take the flat over from you.

Re: Finding an apartment in Biel area

I found a place using WGzimmer.ch. Although they mainly cater for shared accommodation, sometimes people post on there when they are going away and need someone to live in their flat..

What brings you to Biel?

For what it is worth I would not use the agency Livit again.

Re: Finding an apartment in Biel area

We went through this when moving to Biel in April - despite the huge number of vacancies in the city, rental agents would not consider anything less than a 12-month lease. We negotiated with a rental agent who finally told us that foreigners typically sign a lease, and when their work-term is up, simply abandon the apartment/lease. We have no interest in signing a contract that we would end up violating, so we're staying in a hotel on an extended stay (cheaper rate).

Re: Finding an apartment in Biel area

I don't know why there are so many vacancies - the town is nice. It's on Lac Biel, very scenic, lots of opportunity for recreational water and land sports, plenty of shops, services.

I was there on a short visit and it seems nice. Plus it is quite near most major cities. perhaps taxes are higher compared to neighbouring cantons?

Re: Finding an apartment in Biel area

Not sure about tax comparisons, but I hear from locals it is a good place to live as far as money goes - cost-of-living is cheaper than in other cities, while pay is on par.
