Tips for moving furniture (not a full load) from Oxford to Lausanne

We need to move a few items of furniture from Oxford to a village close to Lausanne. We're in no particular hurry to get the stuff there (within reason).

The amount of stuff is probably a bit too much to put into the back of the car but is nothing like enough to justify a specialist removals company sending a lorry over.

Does anyone know of a "man with a van" or a scheduled removal service between the UK midlands area and Switzerland?

And one final question - we have owned all the furniture in question for well over a year but I don't have the original receipts. Will the Swiss customs service take my word for it?

Re: Tips for moving furniture (not a full load) from Oxford to Lausanne

Hi

We had a similar problem and the cheapest solution and simplest solution I found given that ours was about ten cubic metres of furniture was to get a quote from Clarkes of Amersham (www.bluelorry.com I think) which was our local removal company and they have subcontracted to Luker Bros.

We have had to make a customs declaration on the value and because we have been here for longer than 3 years (actually the threshold may be 18 months according to the handling agent at this end) will have to pay tax on the value and the delivery costs.

hope this helps,

Jo

We had a similar problem and had a good experience with a removals company called "Charles Wood". We had about 20 cubic metres of stuff. They come and picked it all up and put it in a removel van which is made up of multiple compartments. You pay for the compartment and accept that the pick it up when they're in your neighbourhood and you wait until they do a delivery of the whole truck to Switzerland. My memory is that it cost about 800 and took about 4 weeks.

We and 2 other people here in Lausanne used Luker Brothers who are based both in the UK and over here. They were really helpful, and easy to work with and do a regular run over here.

Good luck.

It may be too late for you but we will have a small van almost empty coming from Bedford - not far from Oxford - in December. PM me if you want more details

Did you declare it when you moved? I have the impression that to get it in without paying VAT, you must own it for at least 6 months _and_ declare it on the relocation goods documents.

In our case, we had a hell of paperwork (and an overloaded van and the most arrogant git of a customs officer), but they never actually looked at our stuff. IOW, they are likely to belive the age.

Further north - near Banbury.
