I'm looking to rent a relatively cheap (preferably furnished) flat in any part of Switzerland for a minimum period of six months. Can anyone recommend any area where I might find such a flat?

It's very cheap in Glarnerland - even cheaper if you want to live between the jaws of the vice in Netstal.

We pay quite a lot less than 2000 CHF a month for 5.5 recently renovated rooms with a magnificent view of the mountains, an open fire (in addition to central heating), a fancy kitchen and a decent sized balcony. We're also very close to a railway station, have three supermarkets within a five minute walk and a kebab house which is open 364 days of the year.

Pretty simple. Anywhere that does not have an easy daily commute to a large town/city will be cheap. Just use immo.search.ch, set your criteria and zoom in on all the little places in the middle of nowhere. Glarnerland is but one of them. 50sq.m 1-room for 900 is almost achievable in zurich (at a pinch), so you should have not too much trouble in more remote areas.

Canton NE is cheap, especially the northern part of the canton away from the lake. You should be able to get a furnished 2-room in La Chaux-de-Fonds or Le Locle for that price, always assuming one is available of course. A recent newspaper article mentioned something like 20% of apartments currently vacant in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

Except that the taxes are high there. Better off in Fribourg near Neuchatel.

Stephen beat me to it. The other part of the Neuchatel Jura which is very reasonable is the Val-de-Travers- which is very close to the French border (buses to Pontarlier/FRance to go shopping).
