| | How do I dispose of unwanted furniture? (basel)
Hey!
I need some advice- I have 3 sofas I want to get rid of and no one seems to want (even for free!). I've seen abandonned furniture on the pavements, bur I don't really know what the rules are on that- or if basel canton can dispose of it for you (that's how it work in the UK!)
any advice gratefully received! And by the way I don't speak or read german so basel canton website is no help for me!
Thanks, stephanie

write gratis on a bit of cardboard and leave it on top of them when you put them in the street...

AFAIK, you can leave something out on the street with a gratis sign on it, but only until 9pm. After that, if it isn't gone, you need to take it back.
Otherwise, you can take it to your local dump. You should receive 4 coupons each year (each for up to 100 kilos of garbage) in an Entsorgungs package that comes in the mail. But if you don't have those, it really isn't all that expensive. Here in Zurich 100 kilos costs 30 CHFs to dump. Just do a search for your local Entsorgung & Recycling Center for the one closest to you.

I can't find the BAZ article right now, but there was a story about authorities controlling the sidewalks for Gratis-stuff and fining the culprits...

See if there's an HIOB shop near you ( www.hiob.ch). They will take all sorts of furniture and will collect. They can be a bit choosy, but they will have a look and take it if they think they can sell it on to others.

Brocki or broken haus shop might take them.
Have you tried putting an advert in your local supermarket - saying for free - buyer picks up, either a photo of them, or description. although you dont speak/read German, dont think it would be hard for you to use a dictionary or on-line to translate - the few words needed.
also dont know whether there is a freecycle group near you, if you look it up on :
//www.freecycle.org/group/CH/Switzerland
to find it, it is great if so, as lots of people look there for free stuff, but be warned set up a separate email to use them, as you will lots of emails from them, other stuff people are giving away or wanted

Thanks for this thread. I have not received the entsorge coupons in Basel. Could I ask houseverwaltung for it? Thank you!

In Basel (stadt) you get two coupons for free rubbish disposal, each year, included with the "Abfurhrplan" which gets posted to you.
Each coupon allows for 10Kg of stuff to be dumped on the street (you must phone them and tell them you've done this, I believe), *or* you can use the coupon for free disposal of 20Kg of stuff at a recycling park.
No idea where the previous poster got the 100Kg stuff from. That's enough to dispose of a neighbour you don't really like.

Many thanks, Andrianlondon.
I can't recall I received two entsorge coupons from the Basel Stadt, or I may have not taken notice..
Anyway, could I call Basel Stadt to get the coupons? Or, does anyone have spare coupon to help me out? 20 kg is sufficient..
Many thanks.

I can be of assistance to you as I just disposed of 2 sofas 2 days ago.
First off the coupons, you only get 2 of them so many times a year. They are for 20 kg. and not 100. I know cause I got 2 when I moved here in Nov. 2011
2 sofas cost me the 2 coupons. Each sofa was only 20chf to dispose of. That is if I had to pay for it. The dump is near the French border and if you have a big enough vehicle car or truck I would be happy to help you move and take them to the dump. Just shoot me a PM and let me know. I do not work so I can help anytime if interested.
Glenn.

Also, when my wife who is a Swiss native here called whoever it is you need to call about the disposal of the furniture, you can NOT leave it on the sidewalk here in Basel with Gratis on it. That is a big NO NO! You can call them or have someone call them cause they speak German there and they will tell you when they come by and pick it up, put it cost twice as much to do it this way. That is why I took my sofas to the dump cause it was cheaper!

According to the leaflet/calendar you have to call the city's cleaning department to register for the "Grobsperrgut"-abfuhr which happens every week at an specific day depending on the zone you live. They'll pick up > 10kg of (flammable, burnable) stuff. You'll have to stick a vignette (4.5 CHF) for each 10 kg you are disposing, or pay in cash. The vignettes are available at diverse stores around the city.
