Given the rental situation in the Zurich area what are the chances of accommodating 4 children, 3 cats, a dog and 2 guinea pigs. Will we have to forget it and go straight for the buy option.

You might find something in one of the smaller villages outside of Zurich. Browse through Homegate and make some contacts. Let them know what you've got and see if they'll even entertain you.

Out here in Pfaeffikon ZH we managed to get a maisonette with 2 dogs and 2 cats. Stroke of luck really as the owner has two dogs so I think he sympathised a bit. I hear it is tough and many Swiss people fall off their chairs when we say we have four pets here.

Definately look further out of the city, better chance someone will allow it plus you will get more space for your money and access to forests and mountains easily.
