Visa requiring a rental agreement

I submitted my application for a D visa (student) back in September and today I received an email from the Fachangestellte Fremdenpolize that requested a rental agreement signed by both parties.

Hmmm, how does one get a rental agreement months before moving to a different country? I stated on the visa form that I would be seeking accommodation once I got in country. I called the Swiss Consulate here in Canada and got a response that basically said that, yeah it happens good luck! I was planning on leaving in early February a few weeks before my classes started and working on getting a place just prior to my arrival while settling in a hostel/hotel for the first few weeks.

So I'm wondering what to send them. I don't want to fudge up my application by saying I have no place to stay (but that's usually the case when you're first moving somewhere). As far as I understand, it'd be basically impossible to get a rental agreement without being on the ground there, especially three months before you'd even begin to rent!

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience in securing a place before arriving or if they've had the same experience when submitting a visa? I'll send off an email in French today and explain my plan to stay at a temporary housing unit for a few weeks while I look for an apartment.

Re: Visa requiring a rental agreement

They wont issue your permission till you have a proof of address here. You dont need your student visa till you are living here anyway do you? Flats in switzerland are not as easy as most countries to get, especially for a student. would you mind sharing with other people? how will you pay the rent as a student? It may be an idea to get into a WG (shared appartment). Much cheaper an easier to get. check out this website http://www.wgzimmer.ch

Re: Visa requiring a rental agreement

Technically I do need my student visa if I want to legally be in the country to study. We had a big discussion around circumnavigating this issue in Visa board here on EF.

Preferably I would like to just have my own place without sharing hah but depending on the response from police there this flat sharing website may be just the thing I'm looking for to get a place off the bat.

I do internet marketing and it pays for the bills, and I've provided sufficient proof of assets that I wouldn't be anywhere close to homeless in Switzerland.
