Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

Altstetten isn't necessarily a dump but frankly there are nicer places to live - also with that comes expense. If you like your connection to the highway and dislike open spaces, it's for you

But I also don't rate Seefeld and the Gold Coast. I mean, come on - it's not better but there is a snob value with it.

I lived in the Huried/Albisguetli area for a long time and that's quite nice in areas - plus it's very close to some nice natural areas and does not seem to be overly-developed (yet). Kreis 4, I think it is?

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

In reply to the sentiments about Altstetten, I work there at the moment and jog up to the forest area towards Schlieren at lunchtimes. The bits where <insert large bank> have their offices are a bit grim and Letztipark I find depressing. The wooded areas are not bad though.

The thing I don't like is lack of amenities and that the place is generally soulless.

I'm living in Basel now, and the novelty of schlepping to Altstetten each day is beginning to wear off - so moving a bit closer is looking like one option. The thing I like about Basel is the compactness of the town - certainly the part where we live has very much a "village" feel to it and I don't fancy giving that up. Also, the more I read on these fora and elsewhere about Zürich landlords having tenants over a barrel doesn't inspire confidence.

So...my question is...if one were to move to within cycling 30 mins cycling distance of Altstetten, what would the choices be. Basically somewhere with decent amenities and a reasonable amount of green. Also, with the expat community in striking distance?

Cheers,
Nick

PS if someone wishes to ask the same info about Basel I will be more than happy to respond - just to keep the moderators happy

Nick - Im Tiergarten (www.plazza-immobilien.ch). I lived there for 10 years and it's very nice....towards Albisguetli and the Uetliberg and close enough to Flurstrasse.

By the way Letzi used to be exceedingly grim before they refurbished it!!

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

Hi Nick,

Take a visit to the other side ofthe river from Alstetten - Zurich - Hoengg. It's got a really nice village feel to it (well in some ways, it is still) with a nice big coop and other required things.

Tram 13 goes that way. It's up the hill and is really woody. I guess cycling up would be tiring, but going down would be fun and probably within the 30min cycling time.

But it's worth checking out. Wipkingen might be another option, especially the bits near the river. Though having said that, Alstetten isn't bad either, near the river.

~ Nanda.

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

I agree with Nanda, the Wipkingen/Kreis 10 area is very pleasant. I've lived in Seefeld and found it wanting. I chose to live along the Nordstrasse corridor because:
  • It's quiet
  • Affordable
  • Suburban feel with urban amenities
  • Great selection of architectural styles
  • 1 minute drive to the Milchbuch tunnel/Hardbrücke/motorways
  • 5 minutes by foot to the Oberer and Unterer Letten swimming areas
  • 5 minutes by foot to Langstrasse and all the delights on offer there
  • 5 minutes by foot to Wipkingen station
  • 10 minutes by foot to the forest
  • 10 minutes by foot to the main station
  • 15 minutes by foot to Helvetiaplatz (farmers market)
  • Tram and bus stops everywhere
  • No industrial areas
  • Not too many Expats ha ha
You won't need a car (think of the savings in time, money and frustration) and if you use your bicycle a lot as I do, everywhere is less than twenty minutes away, including Altstetten Average prices between CHF1700 and CHF 2200 for well spec'd three room appartments.

Hi all

As a new member to the Forum and also looking for a more permanent location all this info is very useful. On the subject of tax is there a website that summarises the different rates?

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

I was going to say Basel is the best suburb to live in...but then again as I live in Basel but I have to travel to Zurich a few times a week...maybe Zurich is a surburb of Basel.

I think Nick might have beaten me to this statement, however, just look at how full the trains are in morning travelling to Zurich and certainly there is a lot of people who make the commute.

As Nick said it is not really substainable in the long run as it adds up to 3 hours to your day...unless you work next to Zurich station and at the other end live near Basel station.

I think for a lot of people in Basel their fear is that in the end they have to take a job in Zurich but a lot do not want to move to Zurich.

Kreise in Zurich? Where to Live.

Hi Guys,

I'll be over there in February and am starting to hunt for an apartment or WG in Zurich and i'm looking for some advice on where is cool and also costings. I have checked out homegate.ch, comparis.ch etc etc and there seems to be a lot on offer; so i'm having trouble making a choice. I'm a young (just turned 30, still feel like i'm 21) male, I like getting out to meet, people, going to gigs and areas with nice (cheap) cafes/things to do.
I would also like to be close-ish to the HB as i'll be commuting to Brugg. I don't really have any budget limitations, but would always rather spend money on living then extra rent.

One of the swiss guys that i'll be working with lives in Zurich and divided it up in to the 12 Kreise and described them as follows:

1: inner city, old houses, very expensive
2: very mixed, part slightly ghettoish, partly very nice
3: i don't know much about that
4: foreign enclave in zürich, sex-business-zone
5: former industrial area, now being taken over by yuppies and people who like to go out a lot - lots of clubs and in-places there.
6: university area at the foot of the züriberg - very central & nice
7: züriberg, the place where the rich & famous live
slightly dead area, but nice. expensive
8: seefeld, very close to the lake, and the other in-place to live in zürich besides #5.
9,11,12: low-income foreigners area
10: quite ok, but a bit far away from the centre.

Can anyone add to this? I'd be really interested to hear other peoples opinions. My colleague suggested kreise 5,6 & 8 for me.

Cheers

Nic

Re: Kreise in Zurich? Where to Live.

Sounds like your collegue summerized it quite well for you. Provided what you are looking for as far as fun and coolness I would also recommend to find something in Kreis 5 or 8.

Re: Kreise in Zurich? Where to Live.

Let the stereotypes commence

"ghettoish",
"low-income foreigners",
"foreign enclave"

Please go and live in Seefeld, where you can find people of similar mind. Its where all the relocation agents recommend as it makes their life easy...

If you want to have some fun I would live near Hardbrücke Kreis 5, or somewhere near Limmatplatz.

Party-on.

Well said Dave.

Why not save on rent and try 9, 11 and 12.
You're a foreigner, and low income = low rent

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

Hi Dave and GBN;

well spotted, we don't have ghetto's in australia, so its a weird word for me to see used. I actually removed it from another line, but missed that one. kind of made me think of Berlin,... not so nice.

As I was just cut'n'pasting the information passed to me and asking for some friendly advice on what was written i'll hope that you would give me credit for not trying to upset anyone, yourselves in particular.

so.... back to the original question, can you guys offer me some advice on places to live. where do you live and why?

what are Seefeld and Hardbrücke Kreis 5 or Limmatplatz? are they good/ bad/boring/unsafe?

cheers

Nic

Re: Which Zurich suburb is the best place to rent?

Although I don't live there, I wish people would stop bashing Kreis 4 in ZH; it's really no worse than any other metropolitan area in any other European country and I'd say not bad as a downtown neighbourhood in which to live. Certainly more desirable then downtown UK neighbourhoods. There are many positive factors to living in Kreis 4:
  • parks (safe! no needles! Children playing!)
  • fantastic appartments in beautiful buildings
  • excellent cinemas
  • bistros and restaurants
  • clubs
  • boutiques
  • markets
  • diversity
  • street festivals
  • excellent transport links
  • inexpensive
  • Somehow, a community feel. Shock.
  • minutes from the river/main station/anywhere
  • need I go on?
Obviously there are undesirable elements such as the drug scene, prostitution etc. but if you live in Zurich I challenge you to tell me those things don't go on in your neighbourhood. Seefeld is a hotbed, albeit somewhat gentrified. Drugs and prostitution are everywhere.

If you're expecting a Suburban environment, Kreis 4 is going to be a shock; to anyone from a city, it's really not bad If you feel young at heart, you'll die of boredom in Seefeld... unless you're another Yuppie

Try Kreis 4 for six months: you can always 'upgrade' if the environment is too vibrant for you. It's a good introduction to Zürich, and a friendly place to boot!

Where's the best Zurich area to relocate?

Hi everyone,
Can anyone help? My husband (plus me and the little one) have to move to the Zurich area in next 3 months for his job (for about 3 years). Can anyone point us in the direction of where the international communities (preferably English speakers, or in the same relocation situation) live or hang out? It's a big step and we want to be sure we don't choose somewhere lonely!
Thanks so much

Re: Where's the best Zurich area to relocate?

Can recommend in Zurich-City: Kreis 7 (Hottingen, Hirslanden). Loads of english-speaking families, but anything in the city will be on the pricey side. Kreis 8 (Seefeld) nice too, but even more expensive, flats really hard to find, less families. Good luck!
