Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

Hello All. I really appreciate everyone that lives or have lived in Zurich for their input. I have not seen my specific question so I apologize if this is a repeat.

I will be moving to Zurich to obtain my PhD at the Uni of Zurich not ETH. Currently I live in Los Angeles so I enjoy my part of town where food, grocery stores and shops are all within a 10-15 min walk. Does anyone have any suggestions which would fit my apartment hopes but with my current student budget.

1. I am young so I do not mind being in the thick of things, where clubs are not far away but is also not too noisy.

2. A good quality apartment for less than 1000SFR. As long as it has its own kitchen and bathroom, I am happy.

3. Just generally speaking a nice area where it is still young and vibrant and yet not too busy.

I have been suggested that the Kreis around Lake Zurich are the best but I wanted to gather more insight. I also understand that the public transit system is top notch so going places is not a problem. I just love to walk out of my flat and go and grab food within a few short minutes.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

It would be possible to live near the lake for CHF 1000 if you were willing to share with someone, even then you'd have to be lucky to find a two bedroom place for under CHF 2000 a month. Your best bet is to find a flat share and live around the Langstrasse area. It's cheaper, there are tons of young people there, bars are close, as is downtown. There is also a good night life there. You'll hear people say that it's the "bad part of town" but you coming from LA, actually know that the bad part of town is someplace you don't ever go at night, even with people. I don't really consider any part of town "bad" where I as a single female would walk by myself at 3 in the morning.

I really think you would like the LangStrasse area. It pretty much has everything you outlined. Two co-workers (PhD students) of mine live there and love it.

Check out wgzimmer.ch and you'll find tons of flat shares. When you first move here living with someone else is a great way to easily meet new people.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

after reading this thread, I was wondering if someone has anything more to say on Kreis 3. Is it similar to kreis 4 or more for families with parks etc.. ?

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

we are a couple, early thirties, with 2 dogs... emigrating to Switzerland and want to buy a new-build house with a garden commuting distance from Opfikon either side of the lake - we have no wish to be near Zurich itself but want more of a village atmosphere - views - and also near to other expats (we are British)... tax is a concern but not the most important...

therefore, any ideas on a good, safe, quiet, small village that has new housing with views?

thanks in advance

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

If you want a place near the lake then I can't help. I live north of the city about 12 mins commute from Opfikon (I go past it every day). I would recommend on this basis Embrach and the surrounding villages.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

Hello - does anyone live in Bulach? We are moving to Bulach 1 December and as we have never been there (we are coming from South Africa), we would be interested to get others opinions. Apparently we are away from the airport (so says our relocation agent). We have signed a year lease so I guess we are stuck either way - we had to as we are moving over with our dogs and would not have been able to rent temporary accomodation without them. The pics look fine but still a bit nervous.

Thanks

Tanya

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

Bulach is not a ghetto so don't worry. It's rather suburban (or out in the Pampas, as they say here) but it's a nice enough place. Bit out of the way for my tastes but with the doggies you'll have plenty of space.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

It's not my bit of Zurich. I live in Wiedikon (Kreis 3) where a lot of late 20's early 30's seem to congregate (the rents are achievable and its ultra convenient for town adn aslo out onto the motorway system to Chur, Basel etc.

If your weekends and evenings are more important than the time it takes to get to work then I would vote for more central Zurich down near the rivers. Totally inconvenient for Opfikon ofcourse but the transit links out toward the airport are so good it doesn't make much difference. I commute (ha, ha, chortle- sorry compared to London I just have to pat myself on the back sometimes) 10 minutues by foot but I often have to fly and its only 20 minutes by car or the S2 goes to the airport from Wiedikon in about the same tome.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

I live in Schmiede Wiedikon in Kreis 3. It's got lots of kids kicking around with some nice busy parks and playgrounds. There's a nice big park near Sihl City which I think is in Kreis 2 but only just. Kreis 3 is the slightly posher brother of Kreis 4. A little worn at the edges but a bit friendlier with it. Large swimming pools in cycling distance at Selnau and Horgen. We've been here 3 years and its been fine for a youngish couple. If you are thinking short term with young kids then I would reccommend it.

interesting areas to live outside of Zurich City?

My husband is starting a new job in Oftringen but will travel a lot via the Zurich airport. We have a young son (age 5) who speaks some German but will likely need a bilingual school to start. Likewise, I would appreciate an English-speaking contingent.

I would appreciate any advice on charming and convenient areas to look for housing and schools.

Re: interesting areas to live outside of Zurich City?

Hi, why does your son need a bilingual school? If he can speak some German why not encourage that, and place him into a state school? Any where in Zurich has a good schooling and an excellent transport system that allows people to move around quickly. The housing market picks up after christmas and Swiss moving dates are April and October, so thats when you'll see more rental housing coming onto the market. Try homegate and other swiss rental websites that you'll find on this forum to help.

Re: interesting areas to live outside of Zurich City?

Yes, my husband and I keep going back and forth about the idea to enroll our son in a bilingual vs. local public school. We've been in Geneva for the last 2 years, and he has attended a small French Montessori school here. His French is impressive, but he and the other few English speaking children really gravitate to one another... and those friends are dearest to him. I'm leaning toward the bilingual school alternative in the Zurich area just to make the move a softer landing for him.

Re: interesting areas to live outside of Zurich City?

You might want to take into consideration that in a local school your son may make more local friends. Which is great for spontaneous afternoon play and get togethers and integration in general. Nothing against private schools, though...

Re: interesting areas to live outside of Zurich City?

Hi there! We had similar concerns about schooling for our two kids, (we come over in January full time) but in the end, we decided to opt for the Swiss state schools which are by all accounts superb. My daughter is really looking forward to it and the chance to help your children become bilingual really is a gift to give. Non German speaking kids go into very small classes until they learn the language and are by all accounts very well looked after.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

Hello,

I've been following this thread for a while, but I haven't much info for younger people.

I am in my (very) early twenties... I am looking for a place that is really quiet (or sound-proof :-P), walking distance to all the cool bars/restaurants/clubs, and cycling distance (3-5km) to work (the office is on the boundary between Kreis 1 & 2).

My budget is 1000-2000 (preferably closer to the lower boundary!) and I'm probably looking for a medium sized 1BR, starting in June.

So what areas do you recommend?

(And a slight threadjack: I'll be in Zurich for a few days in March and April and for the whole month of May -- when should I start looking?)

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

I would suggest to go for the Wi's: Wiedikon or Wipkingen: both relatively quiet, but close to Escher-Wyz and Langstrasse (Bars and restaurants) and cycling distance or easy public transport connection to the Niederdorf and the Lake. In either area it should be possible to find a 1 BR for about 1200-1500.
good luck!

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

We've got twelve weeks b4 a move to Zurich, 2 young Kids and a dog. Place of work will be Glattpark area, been told that Kusnacht, Zollikon, Meilen areas may be worth looking at.
Ideally a house but lge apartment would do. Rent 3500-6kch pm
Also looking to get the kids into local schools in the area (not international)

Are we being realistic!!! because looking at all the other entries makes you think, Bugger this is difficult!!!!

The otherside of the lake is also nice. Kilchberg, Thalwil etc. With a budget of 3.5 - 6 it moves you into a different league really. You'll have more available to you than say the person looking for something in the <2K range.

Take a look at this thread, it has a list of online resources for flat/house hunting. Start with the first one, homegate.

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

I have just been offered a job in Zurich and was wondering what would be a good place for a family of 4 to live? How much are living expenses? Can a family live off 9000 chf a month?

Thank you
