Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

As if moving from Munich to Zurich wasn't hard enough.... (sob sob)

...any comments on Wetzikon ?? (seems really close to my workplace!) and also good S-Bahn connection to Zurich Hbf.

Second on radar was Seebach or Oerlikon - since its Zurich city and are close to the Autobahn junction.

Gosh...how am I gonna decide / get something by 01.09!!!! :-(

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

I work in Opfikon.(Of Course ).
And It takes me 15 minutes to get to work. By Car. (I have a parking spot behind the italian guys warehouse for cheeep.)

I live in probably the lowest priced gemeinde in the area.
Extremely good value for the money. Spreitenbach.
(Its shunned by the swiss cause its full of foreigners and is industrial.) but all that adds up to is you can get a very nice apartment for a very nice price.

The price \ proximity to work equation is pretty unbeatable.
(Well except for a guy I know that lives by Kloten and rides his bike to Zurich city Center every morning. We know who we are right JOHN).

The bus and train to work from here however is no go. It takes around an hour to go and an hour and something coming back.

But 15 mins door to door by car. 20 mins on a bad day. Unbeatable.

When I worked in the city center by the lake last year, It took me 30 mins. 40 on a bad day by car.
(but the parking there was much much more.)
The bus train combination to go to the city center is actually better. 45 mins and 55 coming back.

So the long and short of it ,based on the simple criteria of, working in opfikon and not spending too much , Spreitenbachs not bad.

Of course you could do Opfikon itself. There are some nice places there. Why not?

3day

Re: Best place to live in Zurich city?

I am moving to Zurich shortly and have seen an apartment in Oerlikon. As I will be working in Glattbrugg, it is convenient for work. However I have heard mixed things about living there. Is it a nice area to live in? Any comments/suggestions would be great!

Thoughts on Oerlikon?

Dear forum members,

I will be moving to Zurich with my family (wife and 1 year old daughter) in March and one of the areas at the top of my list as a neighbourhood where to live, is Oerlikon in the North of Zurich. It is particularly attractive to me because of apparent apartment availability, but also where I will be working, so my commute would be virtually non existent.

Can fellow Zuricher fellow members offer any opinions on the area?

Kind regards,

EH

Re: Thoughts on Oerlikon?

Basically - Live here and love it.

We have 3 kids, 4, 2 & 5 months and have everything we need on our doorstep. 6 mins and 1 stop on the train to Zurich centre, easy motorway and airport access (10 mins drive). A wide selection of shops and cafes (including 2 Starbucks great for meeting other mums).

My eldest just started the local school and we are very impressed with the facilities and its reputation. As there are lots of new apartments being built there is a much greater availability of pre-school places than the rest of Zurich too. There is also a local baths, ice skating rink, fantastic freibad and play parks.

Does that make you feel happier about the prospect?

Max

Re: Thoughts on Oerlikon?

Hi EH, l like Oerlikon good buzz to the place, plenty of good restaurants, shops, good transport links 8 mins train into Zürich, trams connect you too..easy to get to the Airport with train.. there's a new tramlink being built at the moment to the airport. Saturday morning market in the square, you can pick up The Sunday Times at the kiosk on Sundays.. yeah I like it a lot.

Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

Hello,

does anyone know what the area between Buchegg Platz and Allenmoos School is like? We have a possibility to move there and went to see it, but it is really difficult to judge from one visit. We saw one house which is in the process of being built, but all flats are sold out (completion end 2009), and flats were quite expensive, which probably means that the area is good. Or maybe it just means that there is an acute shortage of flats for sale in Zurich

Who lives there?

Does Allenmoos School have a good reputation?

Any info is highly appreciated.

thank you,
Lana

Re: Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

The whole city is expensive.

The area is a somewhat of a transit zone and a little suburban in feel, but those new appartments are rather nice, so take it for a couple of years and find your feet. Right next to the forest, too, very nice. Public transportation from Bucheggplatz is superb. Welcome.

Re: Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

The area reaches from "for millioaires only" to very loud, lousy appartements. It's very much depending which street you have in sight.

Anything on the Buecheggstrasse, Hofwiesenstrasse or Wehntalerstrasse is not recommended for kids in my eyes.
But in between it gets quiet and green.
Between Ringstrasse and Regensbergstrasse it gets very expensive as the single-familly homes take over. Expect a lot of privacy and only rare contact with your neighbours there.
Our daughter went to Gubel school tven though we used to live right next to the allenmoos school (Hey, they are rebilding now too)
The Allenmoos School is small and that's a good thing. From what we got to know them, I would recommend it. But the choice is not yours so your kids might have to go to Milchbuck or Gubel, which are of a total different kind.

Re: Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

To be precise, it's Wehntalerstr. 40, Zürich, which is a quieter end of that street, but is close to Buheggstrasse, which is not great.

The Allenmoos is the nearest school to that address, so is likely to be the first choice.

Sigmaxyquatz, are Milchbuck and Gubel primary schools? Are they worse than Allenmoos in your opinion?

There is a Migros shop close to the place (according to the mapsearch), but we did not find any, must have been closed. So the nearest ones I suppose are now Coop and Denner (walking distance) + Oerlikon numerous ones?

Re: Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

Hi

I live quite near in the Käferholzstrasse (just a bit higher towards the Käferberg) and I really love it there.

Can't really give you any tips about schools as I am single but I am pretty sure that all swiss public schools are of a pretty high standard.

In the Neighbourhood:
  • Great woods (Käferberg, Hönggerberg...Zürichberg on the other side) If you like walking or jogging it's wonderful. The Käferberg has also got a Vitaparcours.
  • A great outdoor swimming pool just a few blocks away, an olympic indoor swimming pool just 3-4 stops away (11 tram) next to the Hallenstadion.
  • A very nice lake (Katzensee) where you can bathe in summer just a few stops away on the 32 bus.
  • Of course the Hallenstadion for Rock concerts, Exhibitions or Ice-Hockey games.
  • Loads of shops in Oerlikon including 1 big Migros (it is also a Klubschule meaning that they give loads of courses there, E.g. Language Courses), 3 Coops (including 1 big one which also has a big Gardening/Do-it-yourself section), 1 Aldi
  • Loads of restaurants and cafés in Oerlikon including 2 Starbucks
  • Great public transport: To go down town you can either go on the 11 tram or from Oerlikon station catch an S-Bahn (About 15-30 minutes from any part of Zürich town center) Oerlikon station is also only 1 S-Bahn stop away from the airport.
  • There are at least 3 Fitness-centers in Oerlikon or very near.

Re: Living close to Buchegg Platz in Zurich (close to Oerlikon) - how is the area?

There is one great thing at Wehntalerstrasse 40: you have a Mobility station (Car-Sharing) just in front of your house.
Other than that. I personally really don't like it. Comparatively heavy traffic and the houses are built close to the road.
I'm walking along the Brüderhofweg from time to time (just behind Wehntalerstrasse 40 - we have friends in that area) and I often think about how much more peaceful it is just ONE building further away from the big street.
But of course, it all depends on what you are used to. I don't want to scare you off. But I recommend you to have a look at it first, before actually moving there. The Buecheggstrasse at this place is more or less the end of a highway.

It seems, they indeed closed the migros. Shopping however should still not be a problem. You researched it very well. There are two shops at the buecheggplatz and a Coop at Guggachplatz - all within walking distance.
Further some stores along Schaffhauserstrasse and finally the shopping malls in Oerlikon. Overall hardly a topic to worry about.

If I find time, I'll get you the webpage/email from the new houses at Schürbungert 39-47 (our former home - you may have a look at google earth). They are like 300 meters away, but one would think it's a different world.

For the schools:
Gubel Milchbuck and Allenmoos are all primary schools (1st to 6th grade)
7-9th graders go to the Liguster or stay in Milchbuck.
Recommendations are somewhat difficult - there is no ranking or the like and I just know the Milchbuck and Gubel/Liguster. Let me put it that way: You won't have to worry about your kids regardless which school. We are not talking drugs or violence here. But I think your kids would have a tougher time in either Gubel or Milchbuck. They are simply bigger complexes housing more children. Gubel has a higher percentage of foreigners which makes it a bit harder to stick to the curriculum. But hey, ours went there too and she's studying Informatics now. In the final analysis, it's all about the teachers and students, making the difference for a better or worse class.
So:
Allenmoos: Smaller school, pretty building in the green.
Gubel: Bigger complex, rougher atmosphere, Building still somewhat in the green.
Mlchbuck: looking like a prison, big, surrounded by streets.

@Martin, Käferholzstrasse is simply a GEM !

Yes, I have got to admit that it is quite nice

The big advantage is that we don't have any problems with traffic I suppose that in the Wehntalerstrasse that could be a bit of an issue.
