Place to live in Basel - Help!!

Hello, I am moving to Basel at the end of December and need to find somewhere to live. I would like some advice on the nice areas of town etc. Any help or information would be really appreciated!!!

Re: Place to live in Basel - Help!!

It depends what you are after, do you want to live in the inner city areas or further out of town? You pay less tax if you live outside of the city centre and in the Basel-landschaft area

I lived in Colmarerstrasse for a while (Basel-Stadt), not too bad around there with quick links to the centre. I now live in Allschwil which I really like as we feel we are near enough to the centre but far out enough to appreciate some of the countryside. Oberwil, Binningen, Therwil and Dornach are also very nice 'out of town' areas.

Thank you very much this information, I will be working in Allschwil so that could be a good idea. I wont have a care so I am presuming that there is good transport from Oberwil, Binningen, Therwil and Dronach??

Re: Place to live in Basel - Help!!

Yeah there are close links to the trams (number 6 and number 8 both of which go into the centre) and also there is a bus (64) that goes through Allschwil, Oberwil, Therwil and Dornach.

p.s. we don't own a car yet either and have not had any issue getting around town, it's actually easier to get around town by tram/bicycle than a car anyway.

Re: Place to live in Basel - Help!!

If you're working in Allschwil, then I'd suggest definitely trying to stay out of Basel Stadt - taxes are much higher there.

Yep I know! Moved here around 10 months ago so I know what it's like organising everything. Where are you moving from?

I am moving from Dublin, Ireland, so not too far. It is just that I dont have a lot of time to look and hoping to have it organised before I get there.

With regards to the taxes, if you live in the city it is higher but if you live out in Basel Land its cheaper?? I have found this forum helpful for that kind of information.

Yes it is much cheaper with regards to taxes in the Basel-land area.

For looking for a place to rent, I used this website

Re: Place to live in Basel - Help!!

I see you're in Aviation, where will you work in Allschwil?

If you're talking about the airport, it isn't Allschwil, and if you're not going to drive you should consider somewhere walkable to the number 50 bus route, and close to where it stops.
Use the BVB website to see what I mean.

People always say this without qualification. Taxes are cheaper outside of Basel Stadt *unless you're single in which case it makes very, very little difference*.

I have to admit, I haven't done the calculations on the single vs married taxes there. What about health insurance, I think it is also cheaper in BL over BS? Or maybe I'm mistaken...

Re: Place to live in Basel - Help!!

Personally I'd forget about the taxes and move somewhere practical.

A lot of Allschwil is on the flight path, not so bad in winter, bloody awful in summer, so forget it.
Also, all the action is in Baselstadt. If you're single or don't have kids, live in the town, IMHO.

You can go to the BVB website to get a view on tramlines etc.
www.alle-immobilien.ch is good for apartments.
You may also consider sharing or taking a room, and take a look on the University website for cheaper accomodation.

I find the sound of aircraft comforting so that would not be a problem. Ok I will look at the city again, I am single and social so dont really want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere. Are there any places that I should stay away from??
