Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

I am a consultant plannign on going to Zurich for work. I can't imagine that I will be staying in my apartment every night. Where are the fun parts of Zurich and nightlife?

Where is the preferable places to live?

Where to start?

Have you introduced yourself so we know what your interests are? Have you done a forum search related to your needs? As a consultant I would hope you know where A starts and Z ends.

If you do your bit, I'm sure the forum members will do theirs.
Get to it!

Re: Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

Zurich is a great city and there's LOTS to do here. It's got big city choices with a convenient, small-city flexibility. It's an easy place to get around and it can be a great walking-city when the weather is nice. When the sun is out, the outdoor cafe's are busy as ever. The other messenger is right - if you post some info about what your interests are, we can help. There's just so much to do and see here, it's hard to know where to start. Good luck!

Re: Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the response.

In short, we lived in Frankfurt last year. Nice city. I love the transportation. Since I will be going to Zurich initially first on my own for 3 months before the family comes, I am interested in skiing (which doesn't seem far), restaurants and getting together with friends.

I guess that's the first part is to find friends. I also would like to experience the night life, even if that means I have to go on my own.

All in all, it's a rather quite town and if you don't know where you're going you won't likely find a "fun" place just by wandering around as the city pretty much dies down after shops close. I don't know how old you are or what type of locales you are looking to frequent but here are 2 websites, which display commercial events such as parties concerts etc. www.tillate.ch and www.ticketcorner.ch Also, this forum is a very useful tool. I've met most of my friends on here and there are always ample events taking place, where you get the chance to unwind and meet other fellow expats.

Re: Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

Well, you are interested in all things, Zurich then! It is a MUCH more vibrant city than Frankfurt (sorry, German friends!). There is a great night life here as well as bars, restaurants and things to do with family (one they arrive, of course!). Zuri West is the hot spot right now. There is a new area called the Viaduct that has great shops and places to eat. I would also recommend you checking out expat-friendly bars like Toto, Iriquois (both in Seefeld area) and Paddy's Irish Pub.

Unfortunately, it is not an easy place to just go meet people at a bar. In other cities, you might be able to do that, but not here. Especially not locals. If you see someone at a bar by themselves, they are likely an expat trying to meet people. So, you are right, you do need to start with at least one friend or buddy to take you around a bit and introduce you. Maybe your relo agent can help with that or some of the people at the company you will be relocating to?

Being on EF will help a lot. There are always activities being posted on here that will allow you to meet new people and try new things. Good luck!

NYC huh...well, you sure are gonna have a ball in the big "Z" then...

This place makes Kansas look like NYC....ok, I'm exagerating but for reals, it was voted the 2nd most boring city in Europe. (hint hint)
You could do a simple tripadvisor comparison with Frankfurt for the fun of it. Under Zurich, most things to do listed were dull museums, square, some church...and the trainstation was also listed as an attraction (I think they removed it by now)...the trainstation!

Well, no I wouldn't put it exactly this way....but it's just duller and quieter and not as easy going. Well, for me at least it seems that way...but I'm a miserable cynic. It may well be, that you're totally loving it here.

Re: Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

Bangkok.
There's a Friday flight at around ten thirty from Zurich airport, you'll be in BKK by mid-afternoon, party through until Sunday afternoon, back on the plane Sunday midnight, back in ZRH in time to make it to the office on Monday morning.

Hey, you wanted crazy - that's crazy, right?

Also - going crazy is expensive in Zurich. I would suggest Berlin. Even with the 300 francs you spend on the flight, you'll still come out cheaper than doing that in Zurich.

I know! It's one of the best in Europe, I love it. My favourite place in ZH.

Re: Where the fun parts are of Zurich?

I have no idea how old the other posters are (I am in my 30’s) but to say Zurich is boring is crazy!
Zurich has a fantastic nightlife and there an many many many excellent bars and clubs. Of course you need to know where to go and I would recommend Langstrasse. Yes there are some ‘strange’ bars there but there are many good bars on or in particular just off Langstrasse. It does not look the best area in town but it is safe and if you like to party you will have a ball.
Also try the top of Langstrasse where it meets Badenerstrasse there are few nice bars there, other areas are Harbrucke (try Schiffbau), Neiderdorf (try Nachtflug) there are some nice bars around these places as well.
Some clubs are Jade, Amber, Indochine, Icon to name a few.
You really need to get out there and try different bars/clubs to find what you like and you will find it, it might be a ‘small city’ but when it comes to partying it is huge.

Not sure what the groan was for, was it because my opinion to Zurich nightlife is different to yours and that deserves a groan, seems a bit unfair to me?
I actually think I gave the op some good hints to Zurich.

...make me cringe. Are you from a rural place somewhere in Idaho? Zurich is beyond dead....if you don't know where you're going you're screwed as the place resembles a ghost town after 8pm.

I have lived in a few big cities in Europe, visited many, many more and Zurich is certainly not boring. As I said you need to know where you are going, hence the reason I gave some tips.
Just because the streets are empty does not mean the bars and clubs are.

Oh and the partying starts well after 8pm
