Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone here commutes from Annecy or nearby into Geneva. If you do - how long does it take/what's the public transport like?

Thanks

There is a coach line but it takes quite a while and the frequency is quite low.

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

Why Annecy?
A two hour commute per day may be better than a 4 hour commute per day, but it's still a bloody long time.
What exactly are you getting out of this?

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

well I havent decided definitely on Annecy - Im looking at my options and what living in each location means. I am definitely looking at living in France because of the cost of living and I would like to rent a house with a garden as I have two children. My husband will be staying at home looking after the children while I work (which is what we do now) and its important he has things to do with them while Im at work. We would like to find somewhere thats not too high in altitude so the weather is warmer, particularly in the Summer and Lake Annecy looks beautiful - plus we would like somewhere close by with nice cafes & restaurants for the evening. what are your suggested alternatives?

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

what side of the lake would you be working on?.. getting across the bridges can add one-half / one hour to commutes at times.

No idea, I'm 'up North', though I'm sure people will chip in, or maybe open another thread?

Is this some sort of 'Escape to the Sun' exercise?

I'm not being sarcastic, as Brit I'm also drawn to 'What if.....' in France and Spain, bouyed along by all the programs on TV.

You could only drive up to the airport and then train into town. Mucho $$$ (factor 700CHF/yr for the public transport card + whatever bomb the parking will cost) and even longer commutes especially if your office is not right across the road from the downtown train station.

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

west... you're talking more Bellegarde direction
Annecy would be more southerly ( unless the drugs are acting up again and I'm all twisted )

anyway I don't get over "that" side of the lake much so I'll leave further comments to some of our more learned members.

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

It's very easy to commute from Annecy, I literally know at least 15 people who do that. They have nice homes, pay less for health insurance, etc, etc. It's very doable.

I wouldn't advice taking public transport, its very poor between France and Switzerland. What most of my colleagues do is leave early in the morning... they leave at 7, and are in the office (near UN) normally by 7:45...

Otherwise if you want to use public transport live somewhere closer to the border, st.julien, etc..

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

I currently pay 3,500 a year to get the train to work and 750 a year for parking so CHF 700 doesnt sound that expensive to me. Having said that, it doesnt sound a good option to go to the airport- sounds like a lot of messing about and more driving than I was thinking of - I might as well drive the whole way if I drive to the airport! Im surprised transport links arent better - i thought France & Switzerland had a good reputation for it.

In general yes however due to low traffic and high cost (multi current trains, multi-signage requirements) there has never been a direct train link from Annecy to Geneva (the missing link of the network is being built now but expect in service date past 2014). The Free Movement Agreement changed things a bit but railways take a while to build.

Sure great idea, you spend minimum of 2 hours per day, often more, certainly in the winter to save a little on housing and asociated costs.

What is your time worth, that the question and with that you can decide whether a minimum of 2 hours a day are really worth it, or if you prefer an ABSOLUTE minimum of 40 hours/month of totaly wasted time.

I live and work in Switzerland and commute roughly 2hrs/day. It's no big deal really.

Re: Does anyone commute from near Annecy to Geneva?

Hi there

I have my home in Manigod / La Clusaz which is 25 mins into the mountains from Annecy ... and commute home every Friday evening and return Monday morning. It is 58 mins from my doorstep to the airport and about 45mins from my hubby's work in downtown Annecy IF I drive outside of the commuter hours (arrive at the border before 7 or after 10 in the am for example). If you are lucky enough to have flexible work hours and can cross over the border before or after the hoardes, then it is doable...

However, in the evening if I have gone home instead of staying in CH, and if I do not leave at 1530 ... it can take an hour just to get from the airport to the border crossing - it is just awful

Do check into the "frontalier" sites about the hidden costs of working in CH and living in FR however - there are specific taxation, healthcare, banking and insurance rules for frontaliers that you should investigate befire making your final choice.

Cheers

Fiona
