Keyfinder...perfect service!

When we first arrived in Switzerland, 3.5 years ago, I read about Keyfinder on the EF. http://www.keyfinder.ch/

We got a card from the local post office, and registered our house keys. Moved house 18 months ago, and it was a very simple process to let keyfinder know our new address, and switch the keyrings to our new keys. Once a year we get an email just checking that our address is current - with a reply if anything needs to be updated.

Fast forward to last week, when one of my kids dropped a house key in transit between Zurich and Lugano. Three days later, a missed telephone call on my husband's mobile, a quick return phone call to an extremely helpful phone operator (in english) and the key arrived by registered post the next morning...

Cost is 30chf per keytag, for 5 years registration. Cost for postage and handling for return of the lost keys was 14chf.

Worth every cent, especially as the spare key is often with our kids or foreign guests.

Basically, how it works, is if found, the finder can put the keys into the nearest post box, and the postal service returns it to keyfinder. It has a number on it, they match that to your details, and give you a call to inform you that the key has been returned, then they verify your address and it is posted back express registered post...

And maybe a mobile number.

On a related point, some (if not all) the keyfinder fobs come with a magnetic disk that holds little round logo/design in the key fob. I am convinced that this magnet wiped out my Visa and Maestro cards that I then had to replace.

As a suggestion, do not put the key fob close to any credit cards.

But it means a greater effort for the finder (getting envelope, pay postage). So instead of the next postbox it goes to the garbage...

Re: Keyfinder...perfect service!

We bought the tags years ago, others may have read about it in this post from 2009.

Key Return Service -- any recommendations (Zurich)?

My recommendation (have a look at the order page that was mentioned in the above link) is that you skip the MAGNETIC version and only order the regular/neutral version. It may save your credit cards if you happen to put the two of them together.

Link to the order page so you can see the different models. The Post Office also sells them but not sure if they have all models.

Brillant idea, add the phone number and any burglar can check before using your key to get into your house if you are at home.

might be easier to have a phone number. then you can speak to the person and arrange to pick it up from them.

I've never had a problem with that and I regularly have my keys and keyfinder magnet in close proximity to my credit and bank cards. Sorry to hear you had a problem with it!

Re: Keyfinder...perfect service!

Count me as one more supporter for this wonderful service.
Specially if you have kids that insist in losing keys and the landlord demands complete replacement of all the locks of the building if you fail to return a key.

I find it funny that people suggest putting your contacts on the keys... Really ?? Keys are returned because it is convenient for those that find it simply drop in any mailbox : if they would have to spend 1 Fr or 5 mins to deal with it, they would be dropped in the next garbage bin...

30 Fr is really no nothing compared with the inconvenience of loosing the keys.

Re: Keyfinder...perfect service!

I was looking for this service, but also found keymail.eu - pretty much the same, and similar price except they (currently) have a 3-for-2 offer.

They also have an option to put labels on things so you can receive an SMS anonymously, although apart from my wallet I can't think of any cases where I'm likely to loose my keys with a specific item an thus need the anonymity.

dropping in the mail means a lag of maybe 3 days and how do you recover your keys from the possibly locked mailbox?

with your contact details, you can meet the person immediately to pick them up. perhaps it is picked up immediately and you are just a minute or two away.

I'd never leave myself without any keys and unable to access my mailbox - but possibly more likely is not being able to get into the house where the spare keys are

In that case the SMS option from keymail would be cool, particularly if I'm still in the locality of the lost keys rather than all the way home.

There's an obvious potential issue though - SMS received, but keys already deposited =

Re: Keyfinder...perfect service!

If you read my original measage, the keys were returned the next day, and we have five sets of housekeys, so the problem is not being locked out, but the cost of having to replace the locks at massive expense..

If I was solo, I would leave a spare house key with a trusted family member. Neighbour or friend...

I'd have thought this was quite clear. At the moment, Swisspea has obviously the option of calling the OH in the case of a lost key, knowing that the OH would rush to assist.
