Oil fired heating

Hi all

Does anyone have experiance with oil fired heating.

I am in the process of buying a property Locarno and the central heating is Oil fired.

I believe this also heats the water and the pool.

I am concerned about the cost of Oil, should I be.

Also is this normal in Locarno/Switzerland.

I guess it's not possible to change to gas or am I wrong in that assumption.

Re: Oil fired heating

We have oil heat - we usually use about 800 litres per year to heat a 6.5 room ca 200 m2 house.

Although, I should point out that I think that 15C is a perfectly comfortable room temperature - YMMV. If you are heating a pool I'd expect you wlll use much more.

IIRC, heating oil was some where around 75-80 Rappen per litre when we ordered it in late summer; our neighborhood buys as a group so we get an ever so slightly better rate.

We looked into conversion to gas a few years ago, only to find that the gas pipes stopped ca 500 meters from the house. We'd have to pay to bring the pipes in, which would have been prohibitively expensive, and might not even have been possible. Our neighborhood association half-heartedly discussed doing this as a group project, but didn't get so far as finding quotes, a gas prices seemed to be even higher than oil at the time.

We also looked into fuel cell, but I understand that the technology isn't available yet, or at least not available here. The company we spoke to said that it was probably about 5 years away.

You should ask the current owners to show you their recent heating oil bills so that you understand what you are getting into.
