Renens - connections to Lausanne?

Dear all,

I am currently considering an apartment near Renens train station near Lausanne. I read mixed response here about Renens (some said it is a not-so-good place to live in Lausanne?)

My question is actually more about the accessibility from Lausanne. I check the sbb website, basically the last train from Lausanne CFF is midnight 00:21? Is there other way to go back Renens from Lausanne after a night-out in Lausanne (like night bus?). I am even considering the option of cycling but am not sure about the hilly situation in that area of Lausanne. Walking is surely out of question as it is 4km away from the centre of Lausanne?

Will be greatful for any guide.

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

All Swiss cities have night buses. Walk the 4 Km you wimp!

There is a train RE-2702 from platform 8 at 02:42 and arrives Renens at 02:47, it goes on to Geneva.
Days of operation:
runs Sa, Su, public holiday

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

It looks from the SBB website like there are trains until about 2:30 in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays (enter a Friday or Saturday "evening" date on the sbb site).

I started looking on http://www.t-l.ch to see if there was a later option by bus, but quickly realised that it is an incredibly badly designed website unless you know the number of the bus/metro route that you want to take.

Using the site's search function to search for "plan du réseau" (network map) brings up absolutely nothing of any use.

Edit: Sbrinz posted while I was writing, sorry for the duplication.

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

I teach loads of students from both Renens and Lausanne and train the route often, and CFF is absolutely a ok.

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

renens is fine. you can be in lausanne under 5 minutes, really. bigger spaces, less rent- you're better off in you can be out of the city and watching money.

connections are often, and for the nights you have to walk home (if there's no pajama bus) it'll be fun and not that bad...

for cycling just cycle down to the lake and follow it to ouchy. once in ouchy you can take the metro for the hills. i think that's a good option if you like it.

So I get now roughly the geography. It is higher iup there in Renens and one can cycle down easily to the lake and follow it to Ouchy? The reverse way should be tiring then I reckon? Have been to Lausanne just a few times yet still can't figure out which area is higher which one is lower...

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

Some numbers to keep in mind if you want to bike:

The Gare CFF in Renens is at 1360 feet. The Gare CFF in Lausanne is at 1477 feet.
This gives you a rough idea of the topography.

Also keep in mind that Lausanne varies in elevation from 1220 to 3048 feet. So it all depends where you do your partying...

Great! Topography is the word I am missing! Is there a place online where we can check topography in Lausanne? From Googlemaps it can look near but sometimes it would be impossible to bike due to the height difference...it is just plain difficult to know about it if one has not been there yet....any insights?

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

Google Earth will show the elevation of any point on earth.
That's how I determined the elevation of the CFF tracks in Renens and Lausanne.

Re: Renens - connections to Lausanne?

dudes,
Renens to Lausanne road is nearly totally flat...
A little bit "going up" around "coop" to rue de geneve...

http://maps.google.ch/maps?f=d&sourc...=UTF8&t=m&z=15

If he's going out at night, then it-s probably around Flon anyway...
Otherwise it-s a 5min going up the stairs, and you're in Riponne area...

As for living in Renens, there's probably students, but also poorer communities, hence the "bad reputation" from certain people, or the "nice community reputation" from other people. Ie there's lot of blacks,
arabs, latinos or portugueses... did not see lot of Asiatics...

Also, it's also depending on what you can afford because Lausanne is pretty expensive- Renens is cheaper (accomodation).

PS: Bus 18 goes there, so bus 7, and bus 9 I think (not sure about 9)

Finally, if you don't fancy biking, try those "trottinettes": going Lausanne -> renen is mostly flat or going down if you take avenue de morges, so it's quick, fun.

This is what I was going to say...

There is in fact a route that leads from Renens to the center of Lausanne that doesn't really cross and large altitude variations. You'll just have to figure them out.

Anyway, personally I think Renens is really really ugly. But there are other benefits to living there. "Easy" biking, good transport links and lower rent are three of them.
