furnished apartment - do you prefer it?

Dear all,

I am wondering about your opinion of furnished apartment. Let's say you do not have furniture. How much more would you think a furnished 1-room apartment worth compared to a similar one without furniture? I am aware it all depends on the type of furniture itself, but just assume a general lump sum cost of furnishing an empty apartment with probably second-hand furniture....is 2k CHF a realistic figure? For example would you take it if the 1-room furnished apartment is about 200 CHF more expensive than the one without (although I do realise it is hard to find two similar apartments to compare...)

Re: furnished apartment - do you prefer it?

Furnished apartments with higher monthly charges generally come with a short lease too. I don't think you can charge much of a premium if you are renting longer term. After a while, people want their own stuff and comfort levels for mattresses and sofas differ. Last week's holiday apartment sitting on an Ikea sofa bed for a sofa and 2 Poang chairs after skiing wasn't comfortable at all for us and living there and i'd want my own chairs and sofa.

We rented a furnished and serviced 1 bed in Zug quite a bit more for 3 months then found our own place. We were happy to pay more for a few months to see how things went with my husband's job here and to check out where to live in the area.

Well, another thing that matters is how long you are going to stay. If it is only for a short duration, say less than 6 months, it is not worth to invest anything on furniture. OTOH is you intend to stay for longer duration, 1 year or more, an unfurnished dwelling will be, among other things, economically beneficial.

Yes it is a realistic figure so at 10 months you break even.
