Finding apartment in Zurich

Hi there,

Anyone have any good tips on how to find an apartment in Zurich? Im moving up from Lugano and would need a small place close to Kreis 4 or 5.

Ive been looking online, but it seems like its a real challenge to find something.

Online (see http://www.englishforum.ch/adverts-p...partments.html) or getting an agency is likely the best ways to go... proper and good housing is tight in Zurich, thus do not forget to look outside of downtown for a lot more places. Public transport is excellent thus you are downtown quite quickly too.

Re: Finding apartment in Zurich

Yes it can be a challenge. We used a Vision AG short-term apartment to get started (http://www.visionapartments.eu). The housing thread mentioned above has many more.

Then lots of chasing flats from Homegate/Immoscout. There is a lot of competition for flats in and around Zurich - be prepared to look at quite a few places before you get one.

It will be much easier once you're actually in Zurich itself and can get to viewings at short notice, rather than trying to find somewhere when still out of town. It took us about 3 months to find something appropriate, I suspect that is not unusual.

Take a deep breath, and be patient. You have homegate and all the other sites, so keep checking them on daily/hourly basis.

Personally I am not sure what the value proposition is of the relocation agencies since they look at all of the same sites, and charge a few 000 for that service.

Good luck

Re: Finding apartment in Zurich

I know this is a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but how long does this normally take? It took me well over a month to find my current place in the US (though I was in free temporary housing, so I was taking my time). For how long does one need to book temporary housing when moving to Zurich?

They look FOR you, set up the initial contacts, deal with all the paperwork, etc. Very valuable if you come here and start immediately a job with a busy schedule, and you don't have time to do all the above, they "shortlist" places for you and concentrate all appointments in one-two days. Plus they are someone who speak German and can translate/explain important things for you should the potential landlord and you have no common language. I personally found it very valuable in my case, as I landed an apartment within less than a month of being in Zurich, while working full time and including a week where I was on a business trip away from Switzerland.
The downside is they can be expensive, so if you have the time and can't/ don't want to spend the money, it is understandable. But I find the reloc agencies very useful in the cases I mentioned, and worth looking into as an option.

Re: Finding apartment in Zurich

If you are only looking for a room in a shared flat, the WGZimmer website is great:

www.wgzimmer.ch

or equally the ETH Marktplatz website:

http://www.marktplatz.uzh.ch/wohnungen/

I finally had some luck and found a room in a shared flat. Good luck!
