Renting on "moving days" vs. off-quarter?

I'm back with more pre-move questions.

It looks like we'll be arriving in Zurich at the very end of June, and I'm trying to figure out the best way to go around apartment hunting. Getting a temporary apartment for a month or two while we search is not a big deal, but I have heard that most leases terminate on "moving days" on the calendar year quarters, so it seems like I'm coming at just about the worst possible time--just at the end of the second quarter, so I will have to wait a full three months until more apartments are available again.

How true is this? I see some places listed on homegate.ch, etc, that start Sept. 1 and later, so it seems like there are certainly some places that rent off-cycle. Is this mainly just the case for sublets, though?

In particular, I am wondering if we would be better off moving our arrival time forward by a week or two, so as to arrive the last or second to last week in June and to have a week or two to look for something starting July 1. But that strikes me as very rushed--it's unlikely I'd be able to do the move sooner than the middle of June anyway--and probably unnecessary.

Any advice? Does it really matter if one starts looking for an apartment in July or September?
