Final cleaning: self or cleaning agency?

The date of final cleaning approach for many tenants in Switzerland! A friend of mine says that he wants to clean his apartment himself !:msntongue:

From experience I know this is not a good idea because the owner will perhaps not quite clean enough. :msnmad: I know they look around until all the hidden corners. My opinion is he must take a cleaning agency with guarantee. That way if the owner is not happy, the cleaners are there to redo the work and my friend can immediately back his money to the bank!

What are your experiences?:msnsarcastic:

We are moving out of our 4 1/2 bedroom apartment in July and we will definitely be doing the cleaning ourselves.

I have inquired to some cleaning agencies as to what exactly they provide for the fairly standard price of CHF 1'000, and it really, really isn't anything your friend cannot do himself. I think it is an absolute waste of money to be honest..

but the risk is that the owner is not happy with your cleaning, not to mention it is much much work to clean everything: windows, bathrooms, kitchen, blinds, carpets, ....
I have moved several times and also do the cleaning myself but I can tell you that never again I will not want to do, I pay an agency, I don't get tired and I'm sure if there is the problem the agency will clean until the owner was satisfied!

We have got 10(!) quotes: from 2800 to 3400( from Zurichclean) in the end we wrote an email to everyone saing : "sorry, we have got a better deal, good luck"
Half of them offered lower price, and finally we have got the agency for 1700( the first offer from them after visiting us was 2900!!!!!).
Shop around in plenty of time( we started back in March)

Three reasons:

1. The cost of labour in Switzerland
2. The standard demanded by landlords
3. The guarantee and the risk that additional work will be required

From what I understand, the final cleaning of an apartment must be very, very thorough -- not just superficial items, but insides of dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, inside cabinets, drawers, cupboards, etc. It pays to get a professional to do the cleaning as they know the standard that is required and which items landlords typically check.

Also, double-check your lease to see if you've already paid for the cleaning. In ours, it states that we need to pay a cleaning fee of CHF700-, which is actually something of a bargain. I'll happily pay the CHF700 and not worry about handing it back clean.

4. Demand and Supply. Everyone wants to have it cleaned at the end of March, June, or September.

If anyone is interested in having a professional consultant come to their place and show them and give instructions, for a small fee I can help you if you send me a PM. Also I have my own cleaning agency and my charges are very very affordable unlike zuericlean.

Hi,

in my experience depends from the situation your are in:

1. Did you havea a cleaning lady before? Because if you did, then the apartment should be pretty clean and most important was kept clean. Most of the time people need to clean it once a week in order to avoid any final cleaning shock!!! If you didn't get a cleaning person before, then it will be best for your to get a company. Of course you can do it yourself if you have time to waste...

2. Is the apartment old or new style? Usually in old style apartment the imperfection you leave behind are more remarkable.. therefore is harder to clean it yourself.

In my experience, I had a cleaning person coming from time to time and when I had to move I did it myself.. hold on...

the owner had complain and had it clean it again... but I paid around 100 chf instead of the 600-700 chf the cleaning company wanted for my apartment...

so your choice..

Cheers,
Aris

Re: Final cleaning: self or cleaning agency?

I cleared my apartment of everything so it was bare, like when I moved in.

I started at the back room, so I would not need to walk back through to it causing prints or anything.

I made my way around in a logical order, ensuring that I would not need to go back and potentially dirty what I had cleaned.

I did things in this order:

1. Cleaned windows inside and out
2. Dusted whole room, ceilings, walls, switches, skirting
3. I then cleaned with a cloth, the lights, switches, and skirting
4. I then hoovered the room
5. I then got my pads on, and scrubbed the floors. To ensure proper clean, mops dont always catch things.
6. Sprayed freshner
7. Moved onto next room

I repeated this process for each room in the building. The oven had broken right before I moved and was to be replaced so fortunately didnt have to tackle that one.

Fridge was naturally cleaned, kitchen wardrobes etc etc.

This took me approximately 10 hours. I had never cleaned so hard in my life. I have much respect for professional cleaners now.

I was proud though!

Upon entry of apartment for inspection, it was deemed not clean enough.

I had to pay 660chf.

Will I be cleaning again? No chance!

I've heard enough stories like this to rid me of any thoughts of trying to clean it myself. If I'm going to have to pay the money anyhow, at least I'll let someone else do the heavy lifting!

What VillageIdiot and JordanBarr said. After dealing with multiple moves in both D and CH I can attest to the necessity of having a cleaner. On top of all the other reasons, let's face it, you're moving into a new place and the last thing you want to be concerned with is cleaning underneath the sink in the kitchen of the old place and scheduling repeated visits with your old landlord just so that he can tell you that he'll be keeping half of your Kaution because blah blah blah.

It's another joy of living here, like the light fixtures. On the other hand, you know that your new place should be reasonably clean when you show up.

And you can be happy you aren't in Germany, where most places come sans kitchen.

That's not at all it. Except of course if you wait until the last minute to decide take a professional cleaner on, which is your fault, and the cleaning agencies have to scramble to get qualified people to come in and do the job.

The landlord wants to make that money from you. Trust me. I mean why else when the apartment isn't done to their perfect liking they have their own number on speed dial, often times of a relative that comes in and does it the way "they like it" to be done? 1000 CHF is a deal for a standard apartment. It's hard work for 1 person to cover, so if they bring in more people the price mounts.

Most people also think that the level of cleaning they get done themselves is adequate and that the landlord will see that. Trust me, unless the building is seriously run down, and even in those cases most of the time not, they take advantage where they can. I have helped on end of cleanings, on the kitchen and the bathroom alone people under estimate what has to be done.

On the kitchen people often think just getting the cupboards, walls, and floors seem to be enough. But there is so much more. Grease travels everywhere. The stoves have to look brand new inside and out. The metal grate inside the stove has to look brand new. The filter has to be replaced in the ventilation. On top of all the cup boards the grease needs to be taken off. The ventilation in the ducts on stoves should be removed and cleaned. The fridge needs to be turned off, freezer needs to be thawed, all the rubber around the doors need to be cleaned, any filters that might be gummed up with bacterial growth have to be taken care of. All the kick plates off the floor, under the sink, garbage can inside and out, pipes need spider webs, bacterial growth, food stains etc. Radiators need to be done. Pipes need to have hair or food backed up inside them removed. If grease build up is too severe on the walls the will have to be repainted. And not to mention the calcium. Which no one ever thinks they have. Ventilation about the vent filters need to be cleaned wether by the cleaner or a professional. And there is so much more, and I am still on the kitchen here.

Professional cleaners, whether thru an agency or some one with a lot of experience with references aren't just cleaning your toilet pretty, they are playing security to your money. I mean did you know you even have to wash out the inside of your mail box? I mean that's not hard to do if you know that the landlord will try to get 1800 CHF from you when he says on the final walk thru they it's not 100% done to his/her liking, and now there is no time for you to do it. But the cleaner will.

Sorry to get worked up about this, but sometimes when people try to do this on the cheap, and don't give the cleaner the adequate time or funds to get the job done right, they get the wrong kind of service for what needs to be done in the end. Do it right, and get your deposit back.

I will recommend you to go to the Migros or Coop, you will find posts of people offering cleaning services, who will def make a good job for much less.
I helped my bf with finding someone, he was supposed to pay 800 and i saved him a lot of money by getting some people and after interviewing 4 or 5 (because as agencies, also some of them try to put the price way too high) i got to find the right person, for the half price of an agency!!!

So have they cleaned his place already? What was the result and the final comments?

Be careful when you are looking for someone to do the cleaning, but not from an agency. I've also seen them done a very sloppy work.

Strange, I twice had a cleaning lady and wasn't convienced at all. Most of the time I had to clean it anyway, because I couldn't afford and be bothered to have them come more than once a week. I moved several times and did all the cleaning myself. It took about six hours for a 3 1/2 piece after the furniture had gone. The trick is to clean the things you don't use anymore in advance (shutters, cellar) and do the rest on the last day.
