Mietzinssenkung - rent reduction, but how?

I caught the tail end of a radio news report yesterday - the jist of it being that the Mietzinsreduktion would allow tenants to request around a 2% rent reduction.

Does anyone know how to go about this, in practical terms? Our contract began yesterday and we haven't physically moved in yet, so it might not set things off on the right foot if I start asking for money off!

You write in, it will happen after the next notice period expires possibly in October, unless you can't give notice in the first year.

Please search the Forum, we are not going to type it all out over and over again...

Lack of concrete advice from Asloca re. rent reduction... so turning to EF

Forum: 10 results searching for "Rent reduction"

You have to have lived through a reduction in interest rates before you can claim a rent reduction! As you have just signed the contract your rental is at the market rate. Please join this organisation, to get proper advice,

Thanks for that - I searched Mietzinssenkung but didn't think of trying the English...

And thanks for that link as well. I wasn't even aware this sort of thing existed, never having rented a place here before.

As you have just signed the contract your rental is at the market rate.
As the new rate was just announced, is it certain the contract is correct?

Re: Mietzinssenkung - rent reduction, but how?

Last night they had a man from the Mieterverband explaining how to get a rent reduction and he showed a letter which they supply to members to use to get a rent reduction. I suggest you contact them as it could possibly save you having to do your own if you are a bit shaky on the German officialese. I'm afraid I wasn't paying that much attention, but I seem to remember that you have a time limit within which to apply. It might have been by the end of June, but I couldn't say for sure. Anyway the Mieterverband would be able to tell you more. They also had a jolly man from the Eigentümerverband who said that most nice landlords automatically do the reductions and that all you have to do is to ring your friendly landlord to remind him.
