moving to Zurich to work around 8008

As the title says, I am moving in august to do my PhD around 8008. I have been looking online (homegate) for places and I see huge variations in price and size. I am coming alone and I don't wish to spend more than 1600 SFr per month on rent. I know that isn't much, but I really can't afford more than that. I would prefer to have my own bathroom/kitchen (so NOT to live in student housing).

Any suggestions? Hints? Advice?

thank you!

I have been looking at a couple of places, but I haven't made a choice yet. Do you have more information and pictures?

Re: moving to Zurich to work around 8008

Not sure how familiar you are with Zurich, but 8008 is one of the most expensive neighborhoods. Do also realize that Zurich is a very small city (in comparison to other world-class cities) and the public transit is very throughout, punctual and fast. Living in different neighborhood could save you significantly with only a 5-10 minute commute.

Beyond that, 1600 for a place with private bathroom and kitchen is in very high demand, regardless where in the city.

Best of luck though, and welcome to ZH.

Thanks for the info, I was aware it was expensive but not that expensive! I am very flexible and don't need to be right there. I would rather not be further than 30-40 minutes away. Do you have any suggestions for neighborhoods around there?

Essentially anywhere in the Zurich city (zone 10) is within 30 mins away. Even neighboring cities and villages can be 10-15 mins away if you are near the train station.

For saving money this is your best bet. A smaller village outside zurich, near a well connected train line. The rent will be half even 3/4 less than in the city.

The city itself (zone 10) is extremely competitive for decent, cheap living. Keep your eyes peeled here, it's the best bet. Homegate.ch is a great resource, but for open houses, you have to be there fast and have the application filled out and sent in asap----and repeat, repeat repeat.

Sorry to sound a bit negative, but it is not an easy task at all. I had to do the very basic student living for a good 3 years, and was actively searching at the same time

Wow... I think I will settle for something outside zone 10 while waiting for something better to show up! Homegate has been very useful, but I am still waiting until I will be there to make a final decision.
