May I put broken glass (a lot) in the trash or must it be disposed of somewhere else?

Hi everyone:

I have broken glass from a mirror. There is enough to fill up a grocery bag. Does anyone know where to dispose of it?

The easiest solution would be to put it out with the regular trash. I don't see any rules against this in the garbage disposal regulations from the city (Zurich), but maybe my German isn't good enough to have noticed!

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Do you have a recycling centre near you? That would be the best solution, I think.

If not, and if you have no other choice, wrap it very well before putting it in the trash, the bin collectors might get hurt...

I broke a large glass recently and I collected all the bits (well, the really small ones were vacuumed up) in a bag which I then emptied into the glass recycling bin.

Re: May I put broken glass (a lot) in the trash or must it be disposed of somewhere e

the best would be to dispose it at the glass disposal depots...but not sure about mirrors since they generally are in a few colors only.
you could dispose it in a regular garbage bag accepted in your gemeinde but make sure you double, triple pack the sharp pieces so that they don't tear open the bag and hurt you whilst disposal.

Thanks everyone. I thought the glass recycling centers were only for intact bottles, etc. Anyway, I'll ask there.

When you throw the glass in it smashes

You're braver than me, Sutter. I always place it in very gingerly in case of getting into trouble...

I always understood the glass recycling bins were for jars and bottles only - not household glass, like beakers, wine glasses etc.

And this is correct.

It is pretty clearly indicated on the bins in my village - "Kein Flachglass und Keramik"

The same information is in the sticky at the top of this section. I'd try and get it to a big 'collection centre' for rubbish if I were you.

Maybe because I live in an upmarket location, I have an upmarket cerycling depot - but in addition to the closed skips with holes for green, brown and clear glass, there is a separate, smaller skip with open flap doors at both ends for broken household ceramics and glass (and blood from fingers).

Ceramic should NEVER be mixed with glass.

Sheet glass shouldn't be a problem, it isn't forbidden around here (nor are colors separated).

Priya, did you ever find out where to take broken window and picture glass for disposal in Basel?

Re: May I put broken glass (a lot) in the trash or must it be disposed of somewhere e

This PDF has everything about recycling etc in Basel:

http://www.bs.ch/dms/aue/download/pu...sorgen-a-z.pdf

Page 78 describes how to dispose of broken mirrors. In short:
- They have fixed days when they take away small, unburnable items ( check http://www.tiefbauamt.bs.ch/stadtreinigung )
- You have to register in advance and you need to buy a Vignette to pay for the disposal

OR

Take it to the recycling park - details of where and how on page 86.

HTH.

Nick

I would hope that they found somewhere to dispose of it after three years

It would be a poor reflection if they didn't
