How high can I build a fence ?

Does anyone know the maximum height I can build a fence between my house and my neighbour without having to get him to agree ?

5cms! I think any fence you need permission to validate its aligned to the style of the building

I think it depends on your Gemeinde so you need to ask there

Re: How high can I build a fence ?

You need to check the building regulations for your Gemeinde and possibly for your Quartier as well, especially if there is a Gestaltungsplan. And of course you need to check that you are allowed to build a fence at all. All this will vary, depending on local regulations. In some places fences are forbidden, and in some required.

For instance, here in my Gemeinde (in SZ) we are allowed to put up a fence of up to 120 cm on the property line, 200cm if set back 50 cm, (or is it 1meter?) from the property line. The height is measured from the property line - so if one is building along a slope one needs to factor that in.

The type of fence might be regulated as well - some communities don't allow solid fences.

---

The property line should be marked with Grenzpunkte - be absolutely certain that you are building on the correct line. If needed, have a pro draw the line.

It is wise to mark the line of the fence to show you neighbor where you will build and how high, to avoid any disputes after the fact.

But as above, regs may vary. See your local Bauamt, they will tell you the exact regulations.

Good luck.
