apartment in Basel

Hello!!

I have been offered a PhD position in Basel and I am very excited about it

I am going to start living in Basel from August and I am looking for an apartment. I have been searching on the web, but I dont know if it is possible to rent a house without being in Switzerland.

Any ideas? comments?

I am running out of time and I will be very happy if you can help me find a flat.

thanks in advance

This is the university noticeboard for accommodation:

https://markt.unibas.ch/nc/inserate/...ohnen-angebot/

Most people on there are used to people coming from abroad or needing something at short notice.

Re: apartment in Basel

Hello quark,

Thanks for the link!
I am not going to study in Uni. Basel. I am going to start my PhD in ETHZ- Department of bioscience and engineering (D-BSSE) and it is located in Basel. (It is the only department of ETHZ that is located in Basel) ..

But still I will check out the link and see if I can find something.

thanks again may the gluon be with you!

Short of it is, you can get around Basel easily and this link is a good start. No reason you cannot live off campus while you look for something long term.

Your requirements make it difficult for someone to help you pop up with a good plan, unless you want to pay for temporary housing, which will run you double what rent costs depending on where you are. Mine was 4600 a month for 3 months while I looked.

Re: apartment in Basel

Rentals in the city of Basel are very expensive - you should plan to spend betwen CHF 175 and 200 per square meter and month.

Renting a place is not that easy - you definitely need to be here so that you can see if the place meets your needs, and so that the landlord can meet you and decided if you are the right person for his or her flat. Then you'll need to "apply" for the apartment, providing documentation that you aren't a deadbeat, and if you are lucky, they will accept your application. It is the landlord's market here - they pick you.

Re: apartment in Basel

I see that it is really hard to find a place when you are abroad. But can you suggest me any solutions? Because I will be in Basel on 10th of August and I have no place to stay right now. If I cant rent a house what else should I do? No dorms are provided by ETH in Basel.

Re: apartment in Basel

Have you looked at AirBnB.com? Maybe you can "rent" a flat in Basel for a week or two while looking for a more permanent solution...

It doesn't matter - the adverts are public. They will probably prefer an ETH student to students from UniBasel anyway, because you get paid more

Also, try the links on this page - most of these don't care if you are at UniBasel or ETHZ.
http://www.unibas.ch/index.cfm?5F1C3...C84A1609122FF2

I'd try and find something for a month or two on those pages, and then use your first weeks here to go hunting for something more permanent in person.

Re: apartment in Basel

This place rents by the month, relative to apartments, they are not too expensive either

http://www.madiba.ch/

Call them up on the phone, tell them the dates you are coming, and they will find you a rental. Since it can be month to month, it should be perfect.

I'd suggest you not wait too long to call to make a reservation. Also, you will not have a transportation problem.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, my colleague used this place for a few months since he commuted from Zurich every day and was tired from that.

Re: apartment in Basel

I just called Madiba immobilien AG and they told me that they have houses at least for 1850CHF per month. I guess I can not afford it

Re: apartment in Basel

There's loads of furnished flats cheaper than that in Basel that you could rent for one/two months until you find a cheaper unfurnished place:

For example:

Re: apartment in Basel

I sincerely believe that the Uni Basel Marktplatz (the very first link that was posted in reply to you) is your best bet to getting something reasonably priced, especially given that you are arriving in August, when many students go abroad for summer holidays and want to find someone to share the costs. Have you had a look at those ads, or is there some reason why you don't want to try your luck there?

Re: apartment in Basel

I have already written to some of the student houses from that link I am waiting for their reply.

I also have found an ad on students.ch for a shared flat which is really appropriate for me and the man who put the ad there told me he wanted to help me. He offered me that I send the deposit+rent for the first month to his account now and I can leave in September if I find a better place or stay if I like that place. But since I haven't seen the house and I can not be sure and I cant send the money directly to his account. (Because one of my friends had a bad experience in Geneva where she had paid for the house before going there and found out that there is no such house )

Re: apartment in Basel

This seriously sounds like a scam! Search the forum for "scam" for more on how to detect such attempts.

See if the property really exists!

http://map.search.ch/

Scam: craigslist Basel

Apartment rental scam?

Suggestion needed - This seems to be a scam to me

Re: apartment in Basel

If I get to decide arranging that house, I will ask a colleague to go and see the place and deliver the money to that man and get the keys for me. Otherwise I wont send money to his account. As far as I know there are many scam ads like that.
