Looking for Student Housing

I'm looking for student housing in Basel. Everyone that I have contact via wgzimmer.ch has either blown me off or has requested that I come to look at the flat. The only problem is, I live in London and will not be able to see the flat in person until the day of move in. Any recommendations on where I can find affordable student housing in Basel? Or, perhaps, where I should start looking?

Re: Looking for Student Housing

It's difficult but it can be done. Could try students.ch.
Your best bet would be to maybe swing down by to Basel and check out flats in person.
Or you could suggest a skype viewing. Thats what I ended up doing with success.

Re: Looking for Student Housing

Thanks so much. I've tried a lot of these various websites. I've probably sent over 20 e-mails thus far with only one reply. They, of course, asked that I come for a viewing. When I offered to skype because, at the time, I was back in the US, they said they had already found someone else.

There is a pay for service http://www.wove.ch/

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Re: Looking for Student Housing

The relocation services are very expensive compared to the alternatives:

1. Get in touch with the department you are joining. The admin staff will know who is leaving or moving house and be able to put you in touch with someone looking for a tenant directly.

2. Marktplatz website, as jrspet said. Don't be worried by a low hit-rate, it's normal and you only have to get lucky once.

3. Use one of the Studentenheim (again, as jrspet said) for your first month or two here, and use that time to find something permanent.

4. Buy flights over for a weekend and visit as many flats as you can in that time. Swiss regularly fly from London City to Basel for about 80 GBP return - far cheaper than any relocation service.

5. Look on homegate.ch for a short-term furnished flat which you can use for your first month or two here whilst you find something permanent.

Re: Looking for Student Housing

I was in the same situation when I was starting my PhD two years ago. It is VERY hard to find a decent place to live unless you are here and able to check out places on your own.
Before arriving, I've made arrangements to view a couple of apartments and WGs, thinking I'll be able to find something in the first few days. They all turned out to be unacceptable on the long run. I've used mostly http://www.immostreet.ch , http://www.madiba.ch/, http://www.homegate.ch/ and http://www.wgzimmer.ch/en/wgzimmer.html for WG's (flat sharing). But by far the best results I had with UniBasel's marketplace: https://markt.unibas.ch/nc/inserate/.../wohnen-suche/ .

Again, it is very important to see these flats on your own. Not only there are scams, but some places were definitely overpriced for the facilities offered.
During my initial search I slept on the floor of another student's apertment from my new department (I asked my supervisor for some contacts after I got accepted). It took me almost three weeks to move into an overpriced room in Bruderholz to look for a better place from there. Then I took my time and found a relatively cheap (but for me perfect) flat near the SBB in a couple of months.

I've visited dozens of flats and WGs where I listed my name and filled out application forms. Then I waited for weeks for a negative response and sometimes no reply came at all (although rarely). Maybe I had it hard 'cause I come from Serbia, and it's possible that lending agencies are not too keen on renting out to Eastern Europeans on a B permit, but whatever reason - it was an ordeal.

I'd recommend that you try to find a cheap room and start your search from there. For rooms try https://www.airbnb.com/ , http://baselbackpack.com/ or http://www.ymcahostelbasel.ch with free alternatives at http://www.couchsurfing.org/ or http://www.hospitalityclub.org/ if you're not too shy. And for the permanent place I'd say that UniBas marketplace is your best friend.

Sorry for such a long post. Hope I didn't frighten you much.

And If you need any "on-site" help in the process I'm willing to help out as much as I can.
