The best brand is ELMEX it is the same colour as most walls in this country!! Tried it succesfully in the past with zero loss of deposit

This is not the UK were landlords contractually prohibit wholes in the wall (or in some cases even rearranging the furniture!). You can do whatever you want as long as when you move out you restore the state the flat was in when you moved in (minus normal wear and tear).

Erm. Not minus normal wear and tear. Minus some but definitely not what you'd expect if you've ever rented in the UK.

Re: How much do I need to pay if I put holes on the wall

Simply walk into any HW store Eg. Jumbo and tell them you want to fill in holes you bored into the wall. They will hand you a tube of something resembling plaster of paris (or something), costing about ~8 CHF. This tube has a tapering nozzle in the front to really go into & fill the hole properly.

In my case it helped that the walls were not smooth but infact jagged (no idea how to describe it best). In the end with no professional help, the wall looked smooth and hole free.

8 pounds for toothpaste?
We buy it from Coop for a lot less than that.

Actually acceptable wear and tear is regulated by law in CH (that doesn't exclude unscrupulous landlords to charge you for things they shouldn't because you don't know the law!).

Do I need to repaint the wall afterwards? I have not rented an unfurnished apartment in my life. do not know why people rent out their apartment without any furniture.

Re: How much do I need to pay if I put holes on the wall

The filler that you get here is pretty much the same colour as the wall. You migth have more trouble choosing the right white paint to cover things up so don't bother if the holes are really very small.

Saying that, we handed our apartment back after patching up holes and using normal white paint to cover some scuff marks and we are getting out full deposit back. (I think it did help that with the place being unfurnished, not having lights on during the inspection worked in our favour).

Re: How much do I need to pay if I put holes on the wall

Our relocation agent explained the contract to us and said that we are allowed to hang pictures, shelves, etc... and don't even need to fill the holes (I probably will though). she did say that you couldn't have tonnes of holes - 10 or 12 per wall was considered normal.

Holes aren't the problem, when you hammer nails in the wall - it's the pipes and cables behind the thin plaster(board), that the nails go into, that will cost you.

Different contracts have different clauses, and in some cases you do not need to fill the holes. This came about because too many people were filling them unprofessionally (using Elmex) and the management had to repair it and that was more work than having it done right in the first place. So instead you will be charged per hole when you move out.

To the OP, do you have flat walls (smooth) or with a texture. The textured walls are much easier to fill. Are the walls plaster or something else?

The mistake made when hanging pictures is using the wrong hardware for the walls. If you have drywall, don't use hardware for concrete. In concrete drilling too large a hole and using plugs that are much bigger than needed is often the problem. If the objects are not heavy, a nail will hold, or use two, and be sure to tap the nail in on an angle.
If you have wallpaper, cut an X in the paper and peel pack the paper, then insert the hardware. When you move out, remove the hardware, and use a bit of paste to put the wallpaper back in place.

If you want to hang a lot of pictures, best to invest in picture rails if you don't mind looking at the nylon wires hanging down. The holes for the rails are made at the top of the wall and a lot less obvious at a move out inspection.
