Sand and or fill (rocks) for Garden?

Anyone know where I could find some fill for some landscaping. I was going to go collect some from the bottom of the Marzili but I haven't lived in Bern long enough to be that weird yet...

Re: Sand and or fill (rocks) for Garden?

Depending upon how much you'll need, there are different alternatives.

We are currently looking for sand/gravel for our new house in Germany. Buying the stuff at a hardware store (OBI, Hornbach, Landi, etc.) is fine for small amounts, but for any serious landscaping, you'll need much larger quantities.

My wife visited a local gravel pit, where they sell directly to the customer - the prices were considerably better.

For example, at a hardware store, you'll pay about 20 Euros for a 25 kg bag = 800 Euros per ton. The gravel pit was selling their stones at about 150 Euros per ton. One cubic meter weighs about 1.4 tons.

If you are planning to put down a path in your garden, say 80cm wide, 10cm deep and 20 meters long, you'll need 1.6 cubic meters, so you'll need 40 bags (800 Euros) versus about 240 Euros buying in bulk.

Don't suppose you know a gravelpit in Bern... What is it called in German? Kiesgrube?
