Posh areas in Basel?

Hi All,

I'm considering moving from Luzern to Basel, and are trying to find an area to live in which is equal or better to the one i currently reside in.

The area should:
Be close to the river and to some sort of park or green area.
Have tennis courts and good restaurants within walking distance.
Free from drunkards, addicts, beggars and similar individuals.

Looking for an apartment 100-150 m2, roof top terrace with nice view.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

Thanks jrspet!

No Nil, I have actually never been to Basel. But since it's in Switzerland I assumed there would be some good enough areas to live in. Maybe I need to go there and have a look. I feel that Luzern generally is ok if you stay away from the area around the train station and most of Neustadt.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

I suggest you get yourself a Tageskarte and visit a few of Basel´s 19 Quartiere ( neighbourhoods ).

St Alban / Gellert

Bachletten, Bruderholz and Hirzbrunnen

Riehen

Matthaeus, Vorstaedte, and Claragraben

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

Have you looked at the ww.homegate.ch website? That will quickly give you an idea of what is available, and where, along with maps that include restaurants etc. The only tennis court I can think of near the river, is one that is in Kleine Basel, towards the Tinguley museum.

Keep in mind that Basl is very compact - you are within a 15 minute stroll of nice restaurants on both sides of the river, from several parts of town. Get a bike, grab your racquet and you have access to all of Basel within 15 minutes max.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

Sorry I can't help you about Basel but wondered if you could be kind enough to answer the same question that you asked regarding Luzern as I am considering moving there.
Specifically, you said in your later posting that you would not recommend the area near the railway station; does this cover the area near the Swiss Life Arena as I have seen several, seemingly nice apartments to rent in this area.

Bruderholz is where most of the uppety class lives.

Did somebody say Claragraben? a.k.a "Ausländerviertel"??

Yes and there is no restaurant or easy acces to grocery stores nor it is close to the river.

Actually, there is no posh area close to the river.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

The tennis courts are the factor which restricts your choice the most, so if you want posh and tennis I'd go for the city (north) side of Bruderholz and the tennis club in Margarethenpark.

It's not so close to the river, but you can take the number 15/16 tram over the bridge whenever you want If you're on that side of the hill, then shopping in Gundeli is easy enough.

Somewhere near Allschwilerweg might be good too as there's a couple of clubs over that way, and you can do your shopping in Neubad.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

Bachletten (Peters church area) is the poshiest. 150 m2 should run up to 4000-4,500. Bruderholz is also nice but it is almost a suburb. Many people like Oberwil for school district, but it is a suburb as well. Good luck.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

Stop it guys, there are no posh areas in Basel. Baslers are really proud of that. The richest really millions rich person I know here lives in Skt Alban. The most English posh person I know here (from Richmond, London) lives in Gundeli. It's Basel here, forget the rest of the country.

EDIT: Actually, the most wanted most difficult places to get are in the center around Skt Peter or below, on the hill below Münster and the windows directly on the Rhine on Gross-Basler side. The concept of "posh" just doesn't exist here. It's just popular and even with money, offer is scarce. Serious home work needed but not impossible.

There are lots of nice places near to the river, obviously you are cutting down your options by needing a roof top terrace. What's your budget?

Or did you post once and disappear forever?

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

I used to live in the Wettstein quarter, which was pretty posh given that its officially on the Kleinbasel side From my apartment I had a vista view of the Munster church, and the fantastic October fair wheel. I do miss that aspect of living in Basel Stadt, being walking distance to the centre and 2 mins from the riverside.

Re: Posh areas in Basel?

The posh people don't live _in_ Basel. They live in one of the surrounding Gemeinde, like Binningen. Bottmingenschloss has a good reputation as a restaurant. Never been there though. The only restaurant in Switzerland I've ever been to that served what I'd call fine food was the Three Kings.
