Looking at Appartment in Unterer Rheinweg, Basel - Can we do without a car

Hi Folks,

We are moving over in about a months time to Basel - we (Myself, spouse and two little girls) were initially going to bring our car over but have been advised if we go central that we really wont need it. The plan at the moment is for our girls to attend the S.IS. and I will be working just over the river.

So questions are - is this feasible (I am thinking shopping mainly) public transport seems so good and we intend on biking as well. I suppose we hope to travel a bit and also get into skiing as well.Never thought I would be without a car coming from Ireland it is essential and a must have.

Second question is what is this area like to bring up a family, seems ideally located for schools and work - when i looked at it on google earth it was particularly busy beside the Rhine (Noise etc.) although looke beautiful in the sunshine.

Any advice appreciated!

It depends where in Basel you would like to live.

I'm guessing by the river, on Unterer Rheinweg.

You can certainly do without a car there. The school and your work (probably) are in easy reach by pubilc transport (or even walking).

A car is a luxury item - a nice to have, but if you're not going to use it often then it's probably more efficient to use hire cars and/or Mobility (a car sharing scheme - search the forum for loads of info).

Another thing to bear in mind is that unless you rent a garage or parking space then it's very difficult to park around there.

Noisewise. It's not quiet and it can be noisy if there's things going on. On a day to day basis though, the people I know whol lived there never had issues with the noise. I guess it comes down to what you're used to.

It's a lovely place to live. It's great to be able to sit by the river, but be close enough to pop in to the loo or to fetch some more cold beers.

You're fine for shopping too - there's a supermarket down at Fischmarkt a couple of minutes away, and at Schifflände there's the bus to Saint-Louis in France if you want to go to the market and supermarkets there.

I figure that a small fraction of the money I save by not running a car and renting a parking space can also be spent on having shopping delivered to my flat. So I make sure that anything heavy and bulky is bought online and delivered, that does include non perishable food.

Re: Looking at Appartment in Unterer Rheinweg, Basel - Can we do without a car

I have been living in Basel for 8 months now without a car. While day-to-day activities do not require driving as the public transportation here is great; there are times though that I want to just "get out of town." When that bug bites, I run (well, take the train really) across the border to Lörrach, Germany and rent a car.

My only wheels now are a bicycle and a shopping trolly.
