Help Buying Mattresses

Hello,
I am new to this forum. My husband has a family home in Egerkingen, near Olten. I depart the U.S. next week to Switzerland on a mission to buy new mattresses and bedroom sets for the house. Is there a store near Egerkingen that anyone can recommend for buying mattresses? Or is it best to go around Zurich? I am in town for only 10 days to get the house furnished. Also I thought I would bring my own sheets. What is the cm for a twin, double, queen and king equivalent? I appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance.

Re: Help Buying Mattresses

Not in the Zurich area so can't help on the mattress shop side of things, but single fitted bedsheet is 90 to 100cm wide x 200cm long and a double 180cm to 200cm x 200cm. Single duvets/duvet covers are 160cm wide x 210cm long, doubles iirc 240cm x 210cm or thereabouts. Normal size pillows here are 65cm wide x 100cm long. Double bed duvet cover sets will include two pillow covers.

I don't know exactly when you arrive, but from the 10th September the mini supermarket chain Lidl has single duvets at CHF24.90, pillows at CHF12.99, fitted bed sheets CHF7.99 for single and CHF14.99 for double and duvet cover sets at CHF19.99 which are good value compared to usual Swiss prices. Hope you've got a car though to get all these things back to your house in.

Your most urgent purchase however, may be light bulbs and fittings so you can see what you're doing. Swiss habit is to take not just the lamp covers, but bulbs and bulb socket fittings as well, leaving you with just the bare wires. If so, make absolutely sure your electricity is turned off before doing any work, although if it's a family home the fittings may still be in place.

Ikea is another good place to visit for furniture, etc, and if you want they can deliver for you.

Re: Help Buying Mattresses

From Egerkingen the nearest IKEA is towards Bern at Lyssach, 39 Km, ~25 miles, around 25 minutes by car, from Egerkingen,

http://www.ikea.com/ch/de/store/lyssach/storeInfopage

You MIGHT get better deals elsewhere, but IKEA prices are fairly low and it is easy to measure everything and test the quality. You can also hire a van to get your stuff home again.

Re: Help Buying Mattresses

If you want to use Ikea for things, then it might be worth having a look at their website www.ikea.ch because that will give you the choice of looking at things with either French or German descriptions. Once you get in store on the German side of Switzerland (Bern and everything east) their computer system will only be in German so if you don't know the language it can be difficult to find the items you want to look for. But the staff are pretty helpful and there are quite a few throughout the store who speak English. You can also check on the website if a particular store has the items you're looking for in stock which can save a wasted journey, but it isn't always accurate.

As zucherbaby said, Conforama is another possibility and they have a store on the same site at Lyssach where the Ikea is, although there may be one closer than that to you.

Hi Sunniew,

After looking from Ikea Spreitenbach to Waldshut/Tiengen Germany, we finally found our mattress and support (Rost) at Concord (Wettingen)(1.80cm x 2.00cm) Since we did not want 2 mattresses (90x200) - typical here in Switzerland - I was able to find 1 mattress that was right for both of our backs - and budget. I received a 20% discount and great service (ask for Caroline). The nearest store to you is: http://www.matratzen-concord.ch/deu/15_/36_Filialen/209_Filialen-Ergebnis.html. We picked ours up so we saved CHF 150 on delivery.

Good quality bedding (currently on sale) can be found at Manor.

Sleep quality = mattress quality. You get what you pay for.

Greg Z just reminded me: Caroline, the lady in Concord (Wettingen) also speaks English.
