UK Story - Force against burglars

Interesting story ... about time this was addressed.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-19879314

Seems to be a softer approach when compared to Cameron's original statement of "if someone breaks into a persons home, then they leave outside all human rights" ... a real pity that the article suggests a watered down version.

Anyone know what the law is for Switzerland?

Re: UK Story - Force against burglars

shoot them in the face with pepper spray, batter them -badly , tie them up, take some fingers/toes off, take his wallet etc so you know his address etc then dump him at the back of the bins with a plastic bag over his head with just a small enough hole to make breathing difficult so he never dares to come back.

or just hide and call the police when you hear noises in the night.

Re: UK Story - Force against burglars

Lots of economic downturn in the news today and it is conference season, what do the Tories do but pull out one of their 'This will go down well in Chipping Norton' policies.

Non-story in my opinion, especially when they pull out phrases like 'non-disproportionate response' - how is that going to be quantified in a court of law, 'reasonable' is difficult enough as it stands.

Re: UK Story - Force against burglars

A week ago someone said pre-meditated violent defence of your home would not be tolerated, and that keeping a baseball bat in the bedroom might be considered as pre-meditated. That is a fat lot of help!

I tell my children, it's better to be charged by the police for violence against a criminal, than to be raped by the criminal. Fight them, don't give in.

play the game..... if one is hit with a big torch that is kept by the side of the bed thats tough.
same goes for a bat in the car... in UK its not classed as an offensive weapon if the ball and mitt are in the car also.

That sounds like an American thing to me, we don't play baseball. Sure it's not an urban legend?

Re: UK Story - Force against burglars

Kind of a hard one to judge isn't it really, for example say you've trained in self defence and a burglar breaks into your home and you catch him and give him a beating.

You can be viewed as a lethal weapon as you're trained, had this happen to a good friend although it wasn't a burglar he got jumped by 4 guys on a night out and they all came off worse.

its about having a valid reason for having a bat in the car... bat only is a bit suspect

ball and mitt is a different story, it impoves chances of less questions but all depends on plod at the time.

Wouldn't it make more sense with a cricket bat? All I could find were other posts in forums, but to my mind, not many people play baseball in the UK, immediately putting you under suspicion.

"Yes officer, it's for baseball", "Oh, where do you play?"

with my mates in the park....

or or subsitute baseball for rounders, forget a cricket bat, the handle breaks away from the main bat too easily

Uhm, still doesn't sound very plausible, I certainly heard it as a teen, but looking back on it, I wouldn't be trying it. Also, pretty creepy to be talking about beating someone so hard you could break your cricket bat on them.

You were the one concerned that the cricket bat would break. In most situations, cricket bats don't break, they're perfectly capable of hitting hard leather balls travelling at a hundred miles an hour, but apparently, you've considered this might not be enough. What am I supposed to imagine?
