Arriving in BAAR

Hello to all the members of the community,

I have just accepted a new position with a company with its headquarters in Baar. I should be moving from Montreal, Canada in the beginning of January

I would like to have your opinion/recommendations on a few things:

1. Considering I have never been to Switzerland before, I was thinking of taking a room or studio before getting a condo or house (in order to get a feel of the area). Is this possible? I haven't seen any of the different websites. If anyone on the forum would have something to rent, please send me an email.

2. Which would be the top 3 neighbourhoods in order to reduce my tax rate?

3. Are there agents/organizations that can help me get bank accounts/credit cards/safe deposit boxes and a car? Could anyone recommend someone?

4. Does anyone know of any local amateur hockey league in the area?

Thank you.

Michael

Hi and welcome to the forum. You will find a lot more guidance on most of your questions from some browsing and searching the site. But, here are some first pointers.

1. Zug/Baar are pretty hot areas for property. You likely will find it difficult to find somewhere good before you are here. Unless you have a substantial budget a house will be expensive.

2. Zug is the lowest tax canton. If you are from Montreal you speak French I guess. Comparis.ch has some tools to help you work out the cheapest gemeinde/commune to live in. It will also have the highest rents and be hardest to find a place in. The question is only relevant if you earn more than 120kchf.

3. Banks are quite helpful in this respect. UBS, Credit Suisse and Post Finance have largest market shares. Garages are good for cars: Porsche have a nice show room in Baar. Just be aware consumer credit is not heavily used here although expensive car leasing is available on the right permit. Relocation services do exist, but Ive never heard rave reviews over their value for money.

4. Ice Hockey I guess you mean. It is a national sport, but not too sure about the senior/adult amateur scene.

Re: Arriving in BAAR

Hi Michael,

Have a look at this site for property around Barr and Zug.....

http://www.amtsblatt.ch/

Not sure how good your German is but click on "Immobilien" in the drop down in the middle of the screen.

Also, on a wider spectrum there's also....

Hope this helps and hope you enjoy your time in Switzerland.

Andy

Re: Arriving in BAAR

I dont know what your budget is but you could contact the Park Hotel. Im pretty sure they have some serviced studio apartments if you want somewhere short term on arrival.

There definitely is amateur hockey but I don`t know any contacts, if you can't find another enthusiast I am sure someone from the Zug professional side would be able to point you in the right direction. Another Canadian I know who has left was playing social non contact.
