Living in Mannedorf

Good morning all

My family and I are moving to Zurich later this year.

We've found a house we like in Mannedorf and I'd be interested in any views, thoughts, opinions on the town and surrounding area.

What are the local primary schools like? Is this a popular expat area? Is it a good place for a family with young children (4 under 7).

I'd really appreciate any input.

Many thanks.

Re: Living in Mannedorf

We lived in Männedorf when we first moved to Switzerland (almost 15 years ago) and stayed for almost 6 years. So my comments are dated - but for what it's worth:

I absolutely loved the town.

Männedorf gave us the best of all worlds. Easy access to Zürich city and Rapperswil by both public transportation and car, yet a small town feel. (I could never live in a city.) The train was a short walk away - and in the other direction, glorious hikes along the Pfannenstiel. It's quite an easy trip to drive farther out into the mountains of GL, SG and GB on the weekends

I don't have children so can't comment from personal experience - but my (mostly Swiss) friends do, and were happy with the schools and family-centered activities available.

Heck, that I actually made Swiss friends says a lot about the neighborhood. I met expats while living there, but I can't really say if there is an expat 'scene', as I didn't need to look for one - the folks I met were all pretty much open and friendly to all.

You have the harbor, the swimming beach, the Uetikon harbor at the other end, which is not a Badi so one's dog may swim to his heart's content . There are a handful of decent friendly restaurants (or there were when I lived there - restaurants come and go quickly as they do everywhere). There is a good Oenothek, a good butcher, a nice bakery, a florist, several small groceries. And Kino Wildeman, a nice art house-ish movie theater.

Taxes are moderate for canton ZH.

All in all Männedorf was an excellent choice for us as newcomers to Switzerland.

Hope you enjoy your Swiss adventure!
