Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

Very normal. Just make sure you close up the house properly (windows, shutters, curtains) and run the heating during the day at a moderate level to keep the place fairly warm. Be glad you aren't paying for the heating to run all night, when it's not particularly needed. Get a warmer doona/pyjamas/bed socks if you find yourself getting cold overnight...

Indeed, this is totally normal. It costs less over the winter months, and god knows heating s expensive enough as it is.

Plus it is very healthy and brings a better quality sleep to be in a bedroom no warmer than 17-18 degrees at night.

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

It's not that bad, but I have a small kid who always removes his blanket from himself during night...
Anyway I have a solution for this known from British / Irish storage heaters (if someone doesn't know: storage heaters are electric and work usually only during night when electricity is way cheaper and radiate heat many hours after they're off)

This is a bit new for me as in my old place in CH heating was on 24/7

I would be very thankful if I were you
The one problem I have with winter over here is how hot the apartments get and how this keeps me from sleeping well
As a Brit I am used to having the heating off at night - my problem is that it does not go off early enough......

))

I used to live few years in Ireland before I moved here, and am very happy about warm houses (I am originally Polish and houses there are about as warm as here )

But if you're too warm you can always turn the heating down... can't you?

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

We have three children. I learnt to "dress the child, not the bed"... it can be a bit tricky to find the right pyjamas, or perhaps a baby sleeping bag might be a good solution ?

Alternatively, our kids jump into bed with us when they are cold

It's a good idea to get a room thermometer too. At work, if it gets below 22 degrees C, the staff start to complain that it's 'cold' and over 24 they complain it's 'hot'... you might be surprised to find that the room is not actually that cold...

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

I was just browsing some thermometers

But as I said, I have a solution, but before doing anything I wanted to know if I should complain first or not (not in this case), on monday I will be looking into best solutions

Thanks for info!

Will your landlord pay for a redo if mold develops due to the cold weather and insufficient heating?

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

yep, that is the Swiss way. Mum used to leave up to sleep in our prams at the bottom of the garden throughout the winter too. Just can't sleep with the heating on and we have the window slightly open in all weathers! If the window is closed, I wake up with a massive headache.

Mind you, most of the people I know in the UK and have their own houses switch off at night too as prices are astronomical!

My daughter used those amazing sleeping bag suits for the little ones, as they just wouldn't keep blankets on either.

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

My building has no central heating, and we only have inefficient electric heaters in my place. I'm usually cold most winter!!!

We use a gas heater in the living room, and put on warm clothes. My kids sleep with a polar pajama, and my toddler girl has a polar sleeping bag (gigoteuse, in French).

But mold is indeed a problem, as our place is very damp because of the cold. We have to use an electric dehumidifier to make the situation manageable.

Do you know if a storage heater is available in Swiss shops?

Mould develops in warm, dark, moist conditions. There are many threads here on the forum discussing this problem. Best thing you can do is to open the window after having a shower/bath, and also open your apartment for a short time (10 minutes) morning and evening, every day, as this will release the moisture.

If you are getting moisture build up on the inside of your windows, then that's a good sign that you definitely need to open the house up more.

I agree with all the advice you give, but in some cases (like my building) the problems are deeper and more serious, and those simple advice are not enough to keep mold at bay.

My building is oldish and suffers from water infiltrating between the terraces and the flats, and mold is there however much you open your windows and air the place.

But that's off topic

Re: Heating begin switched off during night...

I inherite an old-fashioned radiator on wheels, tiles on outside with heat retaining bricks inside. Maybe not so cool in looks - but I use it in our bathroom in winter as the radiator is insufficient. On a timer to come on at 5 to use off peak-electricity. It's brilliant.

Made by Elko Candan in Walisellen- not sure if they have modern versions. Does anybody know?
