where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

Hi, where in Basel area (in which city) should I look for an apartment (1- or 2-bedroom apartment for a single person) if I WOULD LIKE TO MINIMISE TAXES (WHICH ARE HIGH IN BASEL-STADT) and:
- my office is in Basel so I'd have to commute every day,
- I'm young so would like NOT to live in totally boring place,
- I'm looking for a small apartment (I'm single) and not a house or so.

Can you please be so kind as to recommend some locations that I should look at?

Also, should I decide to move there, do I need a car or public transport would be enough?

If you are going to use public transport then you had better tell us where your offices are based. If you are going to drive your car in then you had better make sure you have a free parking space at, or very close to, where you work.

Try this website for maps:
http://www.mybasel.ch/

You get to the maps using the "Verkehr" drop-down menu. This one is useful for working out the public transport links.

Apartment rentals can be higher in low-tax regions. A lot of people think the same way you do so some of your tax advantage could be eaten away while giving you a longer journey to work.

Switzerland can be a boring place to live if you are single. You might be better off being central and paying the higher tax rate. At least you will have more time to yourself with the shorter commute.

Try www.homegate.ch to search areas for apartments. Mieten = "to rent". Click on "Wohnung und Haus". You will then be able to select an area you might want to live in.

Re: where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

Hi RolandRB - thank you v.much for reply and hints.

I checked homegate site, but 1 more question: how would I know which cities are having lower taxation? I mean is it that only Basel has higher tax and everything around it belongs to Basel-area?

My office would be in the centre of Basel (post code 4002).

Thanks again for help/

Re: where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

The taxes in Baselland are quite a bit cheaper. I've got expat friends who work in Baselstadt and commute to Baselland, so it's probably not a problem to get the paperwork to do that.

The Baselland Kanontalbank has printed up a list of community taxes in the past. I remember Allschwil, Arlisheim, Aesch and Muttenz being some of the lower taxing communities. The Baselland Auslanderdienst is also a useful place to get advice. They provide translation service and interpreters as well. Additionally, the Auslanderdienst provides some good and inexpensive German classes.

One thing to note, however, is that the rent you pay will generally be higher in BL than in BS.

Re: where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

I lived in Arlesheim, Baselland, a few years back. At the time, it was the municipality with the lowest tax rate (Steuerfuss) in the (half-)canton of Baselland. I lived there for non-tax-related reasons though. Apart from the low taxes and excellent tram connections to Basel, it has a lot of charm, a splendid Domkirche with a Silbermann organ, and the Ermitage, laid out in the 18th century and billed as Switzerland's largest "English" park. It's a lovely, peaceful area to walk or rest in, and just a 45-minute walk from the Goetheanum in Dornach, an idiosynchratic structure built by Rudolf Steiner and home of the anthroposophy movement.

By the way - I haven't read this thread from the beginning, so at the risk of being repetitive - please note that you are taxed at three levels in Switzerland - federal, cantonal, and municipal. Baselland compares unfavorably with the cantons of Zurich, Zug, Schwyz and perhaps a few others, the last time I looked into this.

Also, rental prices/property values will tend to be higher the lower the tax rate.

Re: where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

My partner told me this weekend that in the new year that Basel stadt taxes would be lower from a bill passed awhile ago. Also he did not think it was that much of a difference in taxes to decide to live in Basel Land as we love the convenience. I think if I was going to live in Basel land it would be in Binnigen or Bottmingen as it is on the tram line and there are a lot of expats there also.

Re: where to live in Basel-area to lower taxes

When I moved here everyone told me to look for housing outside Basel-Stadt e.g. in Basel Land or Aargau.

Honestly, the gross-net calculations my company provided me with for a couple of different low tax locations and Basel Stadt showed a difference that was so small that it was not relevant to even considering living outside Basel Stadt only for tax purposes. But that is based on that if I live outside the town I'd like a car, or have to commute much longer time each day, probably spend more on cab fares etc .... And also being a city person maybe I'm to much dependent on having asphalt and shops and people around me whenever I leave my house....

So - check with your company for some gross-net calculations for some different areas and Basel-stadt, check rents for the areas you are considering and the cost of health insurance (www.comparis.ch) to get a better picture of the costs. But I guess you'd also be as suprised as I how little the difference is, at least for a single person...
And most important of all - take a walk around the areas that you consider moving to...No matter how low taxes are, if you don't like the area...

Good luck!
