New in Basel! Chapter 1: Where to live

Hi! We are moving to Basel in a couple of months, we are eager but a little bit daunted as well. The company my husband will be working for are paying the housing for 3 months meanwhile we look for an apartment. We have a daughter 14 months old and I would like to leave near the city center but have not still clear, whether in Kleinbasel or Grossbasel, what do you think? I am already looking for an apartment searching the web. Do you have any idea about the Schönaustrasse or Erlenstrasse? Appartments seem to be nice there but what about the whereabouts? Same thing with Schützengraben, any idea? I know, I am being too specific, but, who knows? Maybe you can help me! Many thanks Trollope

Re: New in Basel! Chapter 1: Where to live

hey, dont know if you have found an apartment yet but if you look at www.homegate.ch you can search for apartments all over basel and switzerland, you can search in english too... i'm living in grossbasel (basel stadt) at the moment and found my apartment using that website.

Rent in Grossbasel and Kleinbasel differ, kleinbasel is slighty cheaper! also an alternative is to live in Basel Land (BL) instead of Basel Stadt (BS), if you live in Allschwil in Basel Land then you can find nice apartments too, rent is about same if not very slightly more than BS, but income tax and other taxes are cheaper than BS so it may be worth considering! also there is a tram (number 6) which goes to Allschwil and you can get to city in about 10-15mins on it or a 5min drive.

Using homegate.ch you can look at a map and see where the trams and busses go etc. just write me if need any more information

Re: New in Basel! Chapter 1: Where to live

I am also new in Basel and one of the first things I did is spend two days exploring neighbourhoods on foot both in daylight and partially at night. I noticed big differences in traffic noise and architecture (new vs. old, four-story vs. multi-story buildings) depending on the street. I also must say that I felt more comfortable on the Grossbasel side at night but perhaps one evening walk in Kleinbasel does not make for a representative sample so others feel free to contradict me. Gundeldingen (just south of SBB station), Bachletten (near Zoo) and the area near the Spalentor were most appealing to me. I should add that access to a tram with direct service to SBB station was an important point because of my daily commute by train to work.

Re: New in Basel! Chapter 1: Where to live

Hi there,

I have a place in Basel in the old city center (Gross-Basel, close to Marktplatz/Spalenberg) for almost 1,5 years now. I feel very much at home there, its safe, quiet and clean but at the same time lots of things are happening right at your doorstep (such as the yearly carnival... )....

I saw a few places in Klein-Basel when I arrived but I would definitely recommend Gross-Basel if you have the choice...

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions...

Re: New in Basel! Chapter 1: Where to live

I finally have settled on a place near the Marktplatz (location, location ...). I convinced myself that I would not need a car here and that made it easier for me to decide on a place in the city centre. However, if I had decided to get a car, I would have chosen a different flat in the Bachletten area. My temporary accommodation is near the Spalentor, an area close enough to walk everywhere of interest, yet quiet.
