Company sponsoring apartment will I be charged any taxes or other costs?

Hello,

This is my first post, I will be living in Zurich for 7 months from January from Sunday evening to Thursday evening, I will return to the UK Friday through Sunday.

I am contracting through a US entity to provide services to a Swiss business who will provide an apartment in Zurich. The wording on the contract is "sponsor an apartment with basic utilities".

I assume basic utilities referes gas, electric and phone, and really hoping it includes furnishings and white goods (washing machine, freezer, cooker etc. I need to check this!

My more significant concern are personal taxes that may be payable. Presumably if the apartment is in the companies name, then any tax will not be sought from me, but I'd like to be sure.

If you think there maybe applicable taxes, what are they called? Also any other gotchas. Then I can then specifically/negotiate ahead of agreeing the contract.

Thanks for reading.

Unlikely to be gas, electricity is mostly used here, especially in apartment blocks. There will be a phone line, but you'll probably need to contact a service provider like Swisscom to get a number sorted out. Cooker and fridge with small freezer section is most likely, but unless it's a new apartment where washing machines in each apartment are becoming more common, you will be sharing your washing facilities with everyone else in the apartment block and you will have a specific day and time when you can do your washing.

best thing is to clarify in the contract e.g. change to 'furnished' apartment. specify the utilities you want etc.

you'll probably pay tax on the fringe benefits of being provided accommodation. suggest you ask for a tax gross-up so that they pay for this tax.

other taxes are not so significant.
