Help Needed - Slippery Tiled Steps Outside

Hi all,

I would appreciate any advice or experience regarding slippery tiled steps leading to the door of a house please.

We are renting a house that has two sets of tiled steps outside leading to the front and back doors. In the recent weeks, these steps have become very slippery, and yesterday, a thin layer of ice formed on the steps making them treacherous. In fact, three people fell down the front steps yesterday...no injuries, fortunately.

I called the rental agency, and they said that I should just add salt and sand to the steps, but I am wondering if there is a more elegant (and less messy) solution? I asked if they knew of any products on the market, or tradespeople who could assist, and they said 'no', but if I was to find a product, then they would allow me to apply it / fix it to the steps, but at my own cost.

I can see from Googling that there are all sorts of coatings, adhesive treatments, acid treatments and so forth that exist around the globe, but a trip to my local hardware store today resulted in me coming away empty-handed due to not finding anything suitable.

Before someone suffers a serious injury at my place, has anyone had any experience in addressing a similar problem using product/s or service providers in Switzerland please? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

And La Mobilière also insures us quite cheaply for 3rd party - eg in case someone slips or injurs themselves whilst visiting out property.

There is several tapes that have the abresive side to them. You mostly see them indoors on solid rock stairs.
Otherwise a piece of carpet/rug seems to be a simple solution

Lay down some rough surfaced timbre and fix it with a small wedge. Cost effective and you will simply be able to pull it up in spring...

Re: Help Needed - Slippery Tiled Steps Outside

Salt works really well...I'm assuming the tiles are normal porous 'outdoor' tiles that are not slippery when wet, only when icy ?

To crack the tiles? Salt, sand or a blow lamp are the way to go...

Re: Help Needed - Slippery Tiled Steps Outside

Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions. For the moment, I have been clearing the stairs daily, and using lots and lots of salt. In response to a few questions... The tiles are slippery when wet as well, not just when icy, but they are more slippery with ice. There is a hand rail, but many people do not use it unless I caution them that the stairs are slippery...! There are 10 steps and two landings. On the bottom landing, I have put a standard doormat for people to clean large chunks of ice, and I have an all weather carpet on the top landing for cleaning the salt off.

Re: Help Needed - Slippery Tiled Steps Outside

I did a Google search for "anti-slip outdoor tile stairs" and received quite a few search results, including:

http://www.americanstairtreads.com/

which seems to have quite a few products available.

Not sure if they ship internationally, but maybe this will give you an idea of what can be used or what is available.

Good luck!

Re: Help Needed - Slippery Tiled Steps Outside

We have something similar to this at our front door. It's very thick and picks up a lot of the snow and is not slippery when wet.

Maybe try the hardware store - Jumbo or similar - and see if they have a decent rubber mat that you can put on the stair - maybe you can cut it with a blade to the size you need ?
