Renting with dogs

From what I gather from reading on here finding rented accommodation in Switzerland seems to be quite difficult. I'm planning to move over there next year and I have 2 dogs who I would like to bring with me. My question is does this make it even harder to find somewhere to rent? I own my house here in the UK but I know it is more difficult to rent here if you have pets so is it the same in Switzerland? Any advice/experience welcome, thanks

Re: Renting with dogs

It's really a crapshoot. I moved here from owning my own house in the US, and expected challenging rules about dogs and apartments. Instead I found the opposite and every apartment I looked at was willing to accept my one year old golden retriever "Buttercup".

Switzerland is a remarkably dog friendly country, our dog has dinner with us, rides the train, shops with us and more. Wherever dogs aren't allowed (migros), there are leash clips and even kennels available outside.

Good luck to you and the pups.

Re: Renting with dogs

Moved over from the UK with a dog, and while it does make finding a flat a little harder, its not like the UK at all.
As turtonjs said most places have no issue with you having a dog and it won't limit your options that much.
Having said that, the Swiss typically live in flats and if you need a (shared) garden your choices are really limited, getting your own private garden is pretty much impossible unless you rent a house which obviously means you probably need to be outside the city and spend a lot more money.

You'll find a place that excepts dogs no problem, its just how choosey you want to be about that place.

Re: Renting with dogs

Much easier to rent with a dog than in the US.

We found it a little challenging when looking in the Bern Altstadt - but then we realized it was a poor choice for us - and the dog. If the apartment has newly refinished parquet flooring, dogs are less likely to be welcome. Not always though. We also found several newly renovated apartments in the neighborhood of the university, all with wood floors and willing to accept dogs. Total crapshoot.

You can get more space for the money if you move just outside the more populated areas.

We ended up renting something 10km from the city center, 15 mins by train, right next to a wooded area, with a large terrace - for us a good choice.

Good luck!

Re: Renting with dogs

Thanks for that everyone, that's quite encouraging as I know that some acquaintances of mine who own dogs have had a hellish time trying to rent somewhere here in the UK, one of them used to say that to most landlords dog owners seem to come just after smack addicts on the 'desirable tenants' scale

Re: Renting with dogs

We also moved here with dogs.

At the time (10 years ago) we had a difficult time finding places allowing dogs - although I suspect part of that was the relocation agent trying to push us into spending more. The agency was only able to come up with three possibilities in the entire canton of Zürich. Whether this was really true or not I can't say, as at the time resources like Homegate didn't exist - and I didn't speak any German so was at their mercy.

(FYI, if you are searching on Homegate you can filter on 'Haustiere erlaubt' to find listings where pets are allowed.)

We ended up spending more than we had planned, but there really wasn't any other option. We opted for a small, older house - nothing fancy, not in the best condition but livable, with a large private garden. We paid to have the garden fenced in. We lived in Männedorf, one of the towns along the lake about 20 minutes outside Zürich - a very fortunate choice, as the dogs could swim in the lake or hike the Pfannenstiel ridge. Lovely town.

Do be sure to get insurance coverage for any damage the dogs might do - sometimes this is included in your general renter's insurance, sometimes it has to be a separate rider - your insurance company will advise you. In my other homes, I had stone or hardwood floors which stood up well to the pitter-patter of canine feet - delicate Swiss parkett was quite a shock. A rather expensive shock.

If possible, try to find out about neighbors - they can make your life pleasant, or hellish. A good clue would be whether there are other dog owners in the building/neighborhood. Once you find a place, look for people out walking their dogs, ask some pointed questions about how they and their dogs like living in the area.

Good luck in your search.

Re: Renting with dogs

And, if you find a property that you like that doesn't explicitly say that pets are allowed, ask - we found that virtually none of the places in Bern that we liked said one way or the other, and it turned out to be that half allowed dogs.

That's great advice about the insurance.

Re: Renting with dogs

As I don't speak German, I had a friend write up a little 'introduction' letter that I attached to my applications, and in that I included photo with my little dog so the landlord/agent could verify that she was only small. Agree with edot - be sure to ask about pets upfront, I found that most apartment descriptions (in zurich) weren't explicit about pets.
