Any advice on Morges please?

Hi,

I am about to start a 3 month secondment where the office location is in Morges.

Can anybody recommend whether I can commute to Morges easily from Geneva or whether I would be better to stay in Morges or Lausanne?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Keri.

Re: Any advice on Morges please?

Commuting from Geneva to Morges is possible, but all depends where your company in Morges is and where you live in Geneva. The train ride from Geneva to Morges is roughly 25 minutes, so perfectly doable.
From Lausanne the train ride is roughly 10 minutes, so quite a bit shorter.

The major advantage of Lausanne or Morges over Geneva would be that accommodation can be more easily and readily found in these two cities compared to Geneva which is extremely tight.

If you are thinking of coming to work by car, I would strongly recommend Lausanne or Morges as traffic jams between Morges and Geneva are rather frequent.

Enjoy,

Hi

I live about 6km north of Morges (small village named Bremblens).
I've taken the train from Morges to Geneve many times and it can take 30-40 minutes depending if you are on an express train or not.
There are some really nice villages around Morges and Lausanne is a better commute (and a nicer town than Geneve- but that's just my opinion!)

Depending on your circumstances you may want to consider the Morges area if it's only for 3 months as the trains are very expensive here.
good luck,

kari

Hi,

Thanks for your advice.

What are your thoughts on the cost of living in Geneva? My accomodation would be paid for by my employer - what can I expect in terms of transportation, social and food costs?

Thanks,

K.

Hi,
I agree that Lausanne is a much nicer town and less hassle than commuting to Geneva. Lots of nice villages about within very easy commuting distance.

the train to morge takes about 35-40 minutes. Lausanne might be an easier option if you don't wanna live in morges itself (morges is nice by the way).

Lausanne is a nicer place to live and cheaper

The cost of living in Geneva is very expensive but so is all of switzerland.
Geneva is different canton than Vaud (where Lausanne and Morges are) so somethings are different. But in general- a bus ride is about 2-3CHF (it's more expensive if you are going into the country) and the trains are very nice - I have only taken the trams through geneva a few times - I bought an all day ticket for 7CHF but there are other options.
Food- typically for eating out at an average restaurant is 25-35CHF (without drinks) unless you go to a kebob place (10-12CHF).
Grocery prices are very high- well, in comparison to US- but I have read on this forum somewhere that some british folks feel it's more expensive than in UK.
Social events- I don't know too much on this one: a beer is about 8CHF (1/2 pint); a movie is about 20CHF
Hope this helps a bit.
Search the forum - I think there is more written on these subjects.

Get off train at Geneva ..

Either change to another train for one stop to the airport..
Get bus from outside station to airport (no 5 or no 10)
Get taxi from outside train station to airport (cost about 30 chf)

Simples

There has been a change of platform at Morges!

You need to look at the station information boards!

Just a 4 minutes delay

For the OP.

I live near Morges and I would suggest that if you are on your own and for a short period, you would be much better off taking a furnished studio/apt. in downtown Lausanne so you can walk to everywhere and have a 10 minute bus or metro ride to the train station. The train to Morges is normally 12 minutes and there are lots of them.

All the buses leave from the trainstation in Morges. Depending on where the office is in Morges, it should not take more than 10 min on the bus to get there.

Don't bother with Geneva (other than to visit). It will be much more expensive (as mentioned) and more difficult for the buses/train to Morges.

Do a search on serviced apts in Lausanne and you should find some examples. I suggest you find something downtown. Don't let the company put you out in the suburbs of Lausanne.

This was a thread hijack at post#10.

It appears you're answering the OP, which was made over 7yrs. ago.

It's not hijacking, simply using same topic post in order to not to create another post unnecessarily.

So a 7 yr. old thread about someone asking advice on where to live for a short secondment in Morges, is the same as someone having problems working out train and platform information?

I assume you missed your flight, if you're still posting here.

Re: Any advice on Morges please?

The post was about commuting around Morges and so was my question. In case you didn't understand, several trains were cancelled due to power disruption in Renens. Sbb app has send me notification and I was trying to find alternative connection to Geneva airport to get my plane (on very short notice) . You didn't help much though.. Have a nice evening anyway. Ps. There is free Internet at Geneva airport so you presumed incorrectly. Caught my plane allright.

The problem with trying to help out when you only have a few minutes and can't/don't check the dates, hijackings, a**holes etc. before posting.

Oh well. When this post get discovered in another 7 years, people will know that there was a problem with the Swiss trains today and that it is better to live in Lausanne than Geneva if you need to work in Morges. :D
