I do so hope they're enjoying the experience.

I'm beginning to work this out. I need :-
l white paid- for bag for the garbage not belonging anywhere else.
l bag for the compostables.
1 bag for paper
1 bag for PET bottles.
l bag for tins.
1 bag for syringes (my oh is diabetic)
1 bag for Nespresso capsules
I need a larger kitchen, a longer day, because they all have to be deposited in different places... and maybe a life |

According to the paperwork I received from my commune (a small village between Morges and EPFL), we are not supposed to put compostable kitchen waste (veggie and fruit scraps, egg shells, etc.) in the trash bags but need to take it to the commune's green waste yard. At this time of year, the green waste yard is only open on Saturday mornings from 10:30 - 12:00, while during daylight savings time, it is open another hour from 5 - 6pm on Thursdays.
We don't have a garden so have no place to compost at home. This system seems incredibly unrealistic. What are other villages and communes in canton Vaud doing to collect green waste, or does everyone just ignore the rules and include kitchen scraps in their trash bags?

But if you really want to do it then get one of those green compost buckets at the DIY shop. They look like this but have a lid.
(will try to find a better pic)

Hi
You are free to put your veg waste in the sacks. But of course this will cost you a bit. Simply a new tax...maybe why this law was refused by 59 percent of the people from Vaud. Sadly federal law (made by the German-speaking majority) rules here.
The Swiss are responsible enough to own guns but cannot be trusted to deal with their rubbish. Total nonsense!

You are free to put your veg waste in the sacks. | | | | | Is this true? Not according to the flyer we received from the commune titled, "Ce qui va (encore) ŕ la poubelle." Or am I missing something?

Of course
What is forbidden is to use a standard black (untaxed) sack.
It is a stealth tax, nothing to do with protecting the environment.

It's not mandatory to recycle, just highly recommended. And again, you'll pay for each bag you use. Recycling stuff is free. So the more you recycle the less paid bags you have to use.

You're free to put ALL your garbage in your white bags if you want: paper, plastic bottles, glass, etc. But this will be incredibly expensive, considering the price of the bags.
You're thus strongly recommended to recycle as much as you can, hence the brochure with explanations.

Thanks, Melusine, but that doesn't explain the note on the communal garbage bin cupboard door saying that the garbage contains prohibited items.
That smacks of someone having rummaged through the sacks to see what's in them.

From what I understand, they are just going to leave the black bags in the containers (or in front of the buildings?), they aren't going to pick them up. Also any other stuff that people just leave by the trash cans that aren't in the white bags. What happens after that, I have no idea.....the black bags are just going to live on the sidewalk I guess until the locataires start complaining to the concierge, who complains the the gerance, etc etc.

Apparently almost nobody uses the white bag, so special assemented people now ride with the garbage trucks, and put those notices in the buildings where they found black bags.
From Monday onward, they'll start opening all the black bag to fine the people who used them. And they won't be picked up anymore.

My guess is the "prohibited items" were in fact the black bags found in the containers.

I think I'll start organizing coffee mornings at my place: bring cakes and your garbage bags | The following 4 users would like to thank Mélusine for this useful post: | |

How should I dispose of ashes from the fire? Also, I'm not sure what to do about plastics and empty milk cartons. Our dechetterie does not seem to take it. We've just arrived in Switzerland.

Empty milk bottles can be brought back to some Migros and Coop (the big ones) as they can be recycled (but not with the pet bottles). Milk cartons have to be thrown away with the normal garbage.
What kind of plastic? If it is big, it must be brought to the dechetterie. Small things and plastic wrappings go in the special bags to be incinerated.

these sacks are a sack of... <insert your own here>
i don't understand why they cannot adopt a system similar to what they have in Melbourne.
A bin for fresh clippings/compost, a bin for glass/cans, a bin for paper/cardboard, and a bin for other household waste. this makes me so mad...
we've been Swissed.
