Our commune still charged the yearly fee for trash disposal of about 200 and provides two rolls of bags for families with children less than 3 year old. How generous. I would rather have the empoyee working on this great family subsidy made redundant and the taxes lowered :-)

Re: Have you bought the new waste sacks - VAUD

Today I saw a woman with her hoodie pulled up around her face out in the country dumping black trash bags in the trash container next to a school/day care. She forgot to cover the license plate on her Ford Kuga.....

Maybe if she spent less on gas she could spend more on white/green trash bags.

Supermarkets in Basel hide the rubbish bags under the counter so you have to ask for them. I spent the first few weeks here not knowing where to find the blue ones they use here, so went to the park late at night and dumped my rubbish in the bins there.

Because of the value of the bags (CHF 20 for a small roll of 35L), most stores have them under the counter at each check-out or they have them at the customer service desk. You will have to ask for them.

Was in the Coop at Signy centre (near Nyon) this morning. Previously you had to buy them at the "Accueil" desk, but now they have moved them back into the general household (open) area.

This has just started recently in Zermatt too. Except our bags are a hideous orange colour. 26chf for 10 35L bags... outrageous!!

Re: Have you bought the new waste sacks - VAUD

We had a new kitchen fitted not long ago and I had finally found a 35L 'bunny' bag that fitted the bin under the sink, now the green ones don't fit at all so I'm just using the old black bags that do fit and squashing and stamping in them well and stuffing two into a 60l white/green bag. The price of a roll of bags is outrageous in addition to the yearly tax!

Re: Have you bought the new waste sacks - VAUD

While I don't like being forced into purchasing the bags on top of paying a yearly tax for my local dechetterie, I must say I do appreciate the quality of the Vaud bags. They are strong and able to withstand the cramming of quite a bit of extra rubbish into them without being perforated.

The bags also seem to hold up well to liquids being discarded into them; yesterday I poured some leftover soup into a bag and it have not noticed any leakage.

I use the 60 L. bag and can actually get an entire week's worth of non-recyclable trash produced by a family of five into it. The only problem is that the bag itself is too large for my stainless steel kitchen trash can, so I must pull it from the can and sit it on the floor or outside during as I top it up with rubbish.

Yeah, I could use smaller bags and throw waste in those, squash it down, and put them in the bigger one, but I miss the huge communal bins I have in London which are emptied a few times a week and anyone in the apartment block can just chuck stuff in them.
Used to live in Chardonne and we had "moloks" which are like that but buried in the ground. Quite useful - I wish the UK would go that way generally, I thought it was fairly normal for each apartment block to have this kind of thing in CH.

Is this a new thing for you? In Belp (near Bern) we had orange bags or other bags with orange stickers - must have started prior to 2007. When we moved to winterthur, we learned that only winti bags are accepted. if you threw in another bag with an abfall sticker, it was not collected, but rather, left by the dumpster with a bright pink sticker!

I live in a large apartment complex, with multiple collection sites. One has about 10 dumpsters, never all full and yet, people seem unable or unwilling to open the dumpster and throw their bags in, judging by the number of bags there are next to the first dumpster. And i don't think it's old and infirm people, just lazy.

The tax if for the recycling. The bags are for the incinerator. They are two different things.

Yes. It started in January.

I think its a good idea. 20chf is not a lot and its a tax that goes directly to the cost of disposing YOUR rubbish. It will make you think about what you throw away and encourage you to recycle more.

We had in this in Zurich since I first came here in 2003. You could of course just dump your rubbish in the country side and then we can live in a crap hole like parts of the UK and Italy that I recently saw!!!!

WE buy these bags at the Landi but they are for sale in
many places.
I like them and its a good way to pay for the disposal of
our rubbish. I hate the bins they do smell after time even
when you clean them. So our bin is nice and new and clean.
Good system.

The bags come in different sizes, we have the 35L ones, tax is proportional to the size of the bag, so 35L ones cost less than the 60L ones.

As for the tax, in our village it covers pick-up and the shared costs of the dechetterie. As a family of 5 we will pay a lot less in 2013 compared to previous years because we throw away very little. We recycle everything and take packaging considerations into account before buying. Very happy with the new system--polluter pays.

While I don't like the price of the bags, I do like the concept of being more aware of what you're tossing in the bin. It even impacts what we buy at the store. For example, meat from the coolers comes in big plastic packages that take a lot of room in the trash. Meat from the deli counter comes in a small bag. If we are careful, the two of us can get by with one 17L bag per week.

For anyone who might be interested Otto's have a Pressboy rubbish bag container where you can compress your rubbish down to get more in a bag. We've been using one for years; they're very sturdy. You can get them through their webshop for CHF79 with free delivery.

I'm not sure the green and white bags encourage me to recycle at all TBH.

If I'm paying 2chf each time I fill a bag then I'm gonna make sure I get as much in there as possible.. Paper, card, bottles, alu, diapers.. Why take stuff to the dechet when you've already paid for the pleasure of using the bag to chuck in yer own bin.

Yeah I know, save the planet and all that. But half the stuff you take your time to sort and recycle ends up in a landfill in China anyway.

It's your choice, but now the polluter pays. If you want to use one 15 L bag per week or five 60 L bags per week, you can quickly calculate the cost to you.

This is not true, a lot of stuff does get recycled and the pure trash is incinerated, and the incinceration is used to generate electricity.

Here are some official stats and sites for some enlightened reading:
