Places to live, well connected with Zurich HB

I was trying to do a survey of train stations which have a regular (minimum 4 fast trains per hour, preferably 6) service to Zurich HB and less than 20 minutes train time away.

So far, the stations I have are:

Zurich Airport
Stadelhofen
Stettbach
Hardbrucke

Anyone got more?

I don't think that's every 10 minutes, though. Otherwise, you could include Adliswil, or anywhere along the S4/S10 lines.

Thalwil counts - they have 10 trains an hour to HB, at least during the 8am and 6pm hours (the only ones I checked). Some are slower than others but all are under 20 minutes.

What does it matter if they're fast trains or not, as long as the journey time is less than 20 minutes away? 20 minutes will get you a good way up Üetliberg (S10), but the service can be a bit unreliable, with trains running up to 5 minutes late fairly often (maybe one day in five I miss my connection at HB because of that).

Altstetten. I know everyone slags it off, but it's actually very convenient and a nice place!

Re: Places to live, well connected with Zurich HB

I have a feeling that when you're getting to the 15 minute mark from ZHB then in general you're down to 2 fast trains per hour.

For example Baden is about 15 mins with a fast train, but only 2 times per hour. There's the S12 and S6 as well, but the journey times for those S-Bahn trains are around 30 and 40 minutes respectively due to the stops.

For an extra 5 minutes you could include Zug and pay less tax.

Choose Baden! It's very nice and as Slaphead said, 2 fast trains an hour, why would you need more?

Because these two fast trains don't go in the evening? Because it becomes a bit of an inconvenience when it comes to do a little bit of shopping on the go? (I lived in Baden for two months, very close to the train station.)

When it comes to researching "general" options, the ZVV Netzplan (http://www.zvv.ch/en/routes-and-zone...work-plan.html) is an excellent starting point.

When it comes to keeping the duration of the commute in check, keep in mind that you need to get to the station as well. In essence this means that you will want to live close to a station (in walking distance), but far away enough not to suffer from it.

Next, you will want to watch out for air traffic as it comes from Kloten; this can be particular nuisance. Zürich-Affoltern (not Affoltern am Albis), for instance could theoretically be an option, but might have noise issues.

From my point of view, the Gemeinde Urdorf with stations Urdorf and, for my taste even better, Weihermatt is an excellent compromise. These stations are served by the S9 and S15 into Zürich (and to Zug), roughly every 15 minutes, with a ride of about 15 minutes to Zürich HB. Alternatively, you can take trains to Schlieren (medium-sized Migros next to the station) and continue by bus from there. Noise from the airport is minimal, excellent infrastructure. Drawbacks: Taxes are a tad higher than in the rest of the canton, you are outside of zone 110 which makes tickets a tad more expensive.

Other options are, of course, Altstetten (would not want to live close to the station there), Schlieren, Dietikon. These three do not have a terribly good reputation as they used to the dirty industrial area of the canton. Things are improving there, though (claims the Limmattal newspaper).

Conclusion: yes, pretty much. Not sure why OP only has the shortlist in the first post. Stadelhofen is only 2 mins from the HB, is it even worth mentioning?

Giesshubel (S4) and Zurich Binz (S10) also have trains to HB every 10 minutes in rush hour mornings and evenings, and every 20 mins at all other times.

Not by a long shot.

It's really mostly places relatively close to Zürich and some areas alongside the lake.

Re: Places to live, well connected with Zurich HB

I live directly at the Wallisellen train station. If I really sprint I am at the Zurich Hauptbahnhof in about 11 minutes and 20 seconds. 20 seconds is the running time but I know I could improve it if I really tried.

Re: Places to live, well connected with Zurich HB

Down the west side of the lake, there are 4+ trains an hour to:

Wiedikon
Enge
Wollishofen
Kilchberg
Ruschlikon
Thalwil
Oberrieden (if you include both stations)
Horgen (if you include both stations)

Trains to Adliswil etc. on the S4 are only 3 an hour, except during rush hours.
