Opinions - living in Neue Oerlikon?

Hi all,

Does anybody live close to the Oerlikon main station? I am deciding to buy a (new build) apartment in Eisfeldstrasse and I would like to know a bit more about the area around.
What is your impression of the environment outthere? If you have kids, what is the kindergarten level? are you happy with that? Schools perhaps?
Do you advice moving in that area?
So, generally, I would like to get all the pros and cons about the place.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Opinions - living in Neue Oerlikon?

The whole area there is undergoing a huge renovation (much of which is finished). You'd be well-located for the station, Center 11, some restaurants and it is about 70% residential and 30% business in the area.

I know nothing about what they have for kids though. But I've changed your thread title to something someone might actually look at

Re: Opinions - living in Neue Oerlikon?

Thank you very much for changing the title
Actually, we visited the place of the building, and, generally the place was not 100% of how we was expecting it. The train is something like 20meters from the future building, and I was never living close to the railways , so for me is hard to say if it will have a big impact on the quality of life. Does anybody lives close to the railways??? There is a lot of people living in that area so I think that is not such a hassle, but.. better to hear it from somebody

I know that Oerlikon is growing and that today the infrastructure is much different of what will be in a couple of years, but still, I would prefer somebody that lives there that may share some impressions.

thank you in advance.

Re: Opinions - living in Neue Oerlikon?

I live in Oerlikon (not the new side, though), but am not sure I can be of much help.

When I first got there, on a Sunday, it was dead, and I felt quite depressed at my choice of apartment. But now I live there, I am actually really happy. However, I don't live near the station - I live near Berninaplatz, three tram stops away.

I don't really notice the noise of the planes, which is what a friend asked me. I like the fact that you have a good enough selection of shops at your door, but that if you want the buzz of the city or a larger selection, you can just hop on the train and be in the centre very soon. Connections are really good, every five minutes or so.

I have a lovely large terrace, which I enjoy more than I thought I would and I would not have had that had I got the apartment I originally wanted in Seefeld or the one I also contemplated in Meilen. I would miss the terrace now if I didn't have it, but this doesn't really affect you. But where I live is quiet and yet I can have the city life if I want it too. That's what I like. And, as I said, convenient shopping if I can't be bothered with the hassle of the crowds.

I don't have a family, but I reckon it is OK for children. There's a little playground in the market square for the children and the big chess boards for the adults. And the market is good. There's also the nearby swimming pool and the ice rink. And in Summer the open-air pool three stops away on the number 11 tram (forgotten its name!) is brilliant for all the family.

I sometimes wonder if I would prefer to be in the city or near the lake, but I usually conclude I am happier where I am.

Not sure about the train noise, but I think places are usually quite well insulated here, especially in a new build.

But maybe I am biased or just in a good mood today...

Thank you very much for your answer. Indeed, a friend of mine is living in Bernina strasse and I think that that place is like an oasis in the city.Beautiful. Unfortunatelly, where I wanted to move is exactly between the Sunrise tower and the Oerlikon station. A very strange place.

Anyway, yesterday my wife and me decided not to take that apartment, especially because of the train noise (we wouldn't like to buy an apartment and living there with closed windows all the time).

Thank you for your post!

Tschuss

Personally I don't think I would want an apartment that's 20 meters from the Oerlikon train station, that is a very busy station..!
