What is the cost of heating a house...?

Hi,

We are getting huge heating bills. Can anyone share their costs or experiences?

We have a 270sqm house, 11 years old, near Geneva. Heating is via under-floor, propane-fed.

Filled the tank in October. Refilled it in January. Have to refill it again. CHF3000 each time.

Is this usual...?

Thanks for your assistance.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

Tank size and your thermostat setting would help those in similar set ups.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

Very big if it costs CHF3,000 a time, or else propone is very expensive compared to mazout.

To put just under 2,000 litres in our 3,500 litre mazout tank last year cost CHF1,985 and we do a once a year fill-up. Trying to hang on this time around so we can get it a bit cheaper by putting in 3,000 litres.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

We have a 160 square metre detached modern house with underfloor heating. We have an air heat pump for heating and hot water and our annual bill is usually CHF 320. We have not yet had last winter's bill, but don't expect it to be much different. And we have the temp at 22 deg...

If you can afford a mansion near Geneva then you should be able to afford the upkeep too...

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

We go through 3000 liters of heating oil in about 15 months.
That's about 3K CHFs, or about 200 CHFs a month. The system heats the house (underfloor) and generates all the hot water.

This time I put a timer on the burner that keeps it shut off for half the time, so I am interested to see what it'll be this time.

The heat pump system probably cost 60k & will require a major revision after 15-20 years. Nothing is free.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

Our yearly bill for heating and electric on a 290sqm house is approx 1300chf.

The heating system is air heat pump which is controlled by a thermostat and run by electricity.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

The layout of your house will also be a factor.

For instance, we have a 220m2 house, but it is on four stories - the footprint is quite small. We only need to turn on the heating in half the house; heat rises, the top two floors stay toasty warm even with the underfloor heating turned all the way off. So we only use ca 800-1000 liters per year.

On the other hand, if you have a large footprint on one or two floors you will end up spending quite a bit more on heating.

Re: What is the cost of heating a house...?

I've just had the electricity bill for the heating and hot water by warm pump for the last 12 months 15 May 2012 to 29 May 2013.

Due the extended winter we used 13% more kWh over this period. Add this to increased "net usage charge" and the total bill was almost 25% more than the previous year at CHF 582.91, which in turn was considerably more that the cost three years ago quoted above.

Most heating systems will need replacing in this period too. I would expect heat pumps to be much more mainstream and cheaper in 15-20 years.

Meanwhile we also save CHF420.00 a year having our previous gas boiler serviced (as demanded by the 'Fire Police'). Plus we can repel spuriously claims by chimney sweeps who used to try and insist that we needed their service for a gas flue.

The heat pump just needs leaves vacuuming out of it once a year and is carbon neutral, whatever that really means...
